I have had my male betta in a small bowl for months and finally decided to get a bigger tank. I went out and bought a 5 gal hex but while I was at Walmart getting it, I saw a 10 gal tank too for the same price. I was thinking of maybe eventually putting a couple tankmates in there with him, and now that I have the 5g set up, it looks nice but I wonder if I should have gotten the bigger one if I want to put more fish in there. I like how quiet the hex is and hope the other one would be the same way. Another thing I just realized is, he has been constantly swimming in there since I got it about 5 days ago (swimming fast, up and down, back and forth, from corner to corner). I had been turning off the filter to try to feed him and he hasnt eaten until tonight I turned it off and left it off for awhile. He finally seemed to calm down a little bit and actually ate. Would a bigger tank have more calmer places for him? What do you guys think? Should I keep what I have and maybe just leave him in there alone, or get the other?

Bettas can be freaked out by a new tank, and take 3 days to get into eating. I would keep the light off, as this helps reduce stress. A plant, real or fake would give him somewhere to rest (they sometimes rest on the leaves up near the surface). If you buy a plastic plant, make sure it's not spikey as it could damage his fins. Bettas aren't usually good with tankmates. They are best kept on their own. If you want to get the bigger tank, I would put other fish in there that are compatible with each other.

Maybe post a pic of your Betta when he settles into his new home :). We love pics.

Hi there. I actually have live plants in there. Were you suggesting getting the bigger tank for other fish and leaving the betta in the one I have now?

Yes, that would be a good idea I think :).

Well, maybe someday, but I don't really have room for two tanks right now. So I either need to stick with what I have or return it for a bigger one.
