Hi,

I need some help, i'm pretty much colour blind.....I find it very hard to distinguish between shades. Could someone help me with this? I'm planning on starting to fishless cycle next week and can't tell the difference lol (Hopefully the picture works) Hoping for it to be around 5ppm, although the ammonia source is probably a year old or so, it may have lost strength.

I have a fully cycled Interpet filter in a smaller tank and I'm planning on removing all the media from this and adding it to a Fluval U4 filter in a tank double the size. How long do you think this new filter will take to cycle? Will the current be too strong for a 134 litre aquarium. I've read its best to get the biggest filter you can afford/fit, but now I am worrying the current might be too strong! Last question - Can airstones raise pH to a noticeable effect by removing lots of CO2 or will it remove litte?

Summary of questions:

1) Colour of the picture?
2) How quickly will the filter cycle?
3) Will a current of a U4 be too strong in a 134 litre aquarium?
4) Can airstones really raise pH substantially?

Thanks in advanced.

1) Colour of the picture?

2ppm (so your ammonia has lost some strength)

2) How quickly will the filter cycle?

If you're careful with the move the filter will be instantly cycled for the bioload you had in that tank. But be prepared for a mini cycle.

3) Will a current of a U4 be too strong in a 134 litre aquarium?

No. (1000l/h flow rate so tank turnover of 7.7 times, more like 5 or 6 in practise)

4) Can airstones really raise pH substantially?

Yes, if you have a sufficiently powerful one, or more than one.

Thanks a lot Prime Ordeal :)

Just wandering if you could answer one last question for me, do you have to acclimatise your bacteria to a new tank like you do with fish?

You do indeed and not doing so is why people often get an (avoidable) mini-cycle. Just run the old filter in a bucket of old tank water (from the the tank it was in), with a heater and either drip acclimatise or add very small quantities of the new tank water over the course of a couple of hours. Then, as gently as you can, remove the old media and place in the new filter in the new tank and away you go. Hopefully no mini-cycle that way.

Ahh ok will do as you suggested, thanks, could of gone awfully wrong!

Would a 12" air stone and air pump rated at 120L/H cause the pH to rise? What about if it was left on for only a couple hours a day?

My pH is 7.8 that's why i'm worried so much ha
