I have a 130 gallon tank and I would like to get discus Have had chiclids in the past but only aggressive ones. So here I go with all the stuff I got from the pet store please let me know what is true and what is false. OK I would like to put a stingray in with the discus is this OK? If no one knows I will ask that in the odd ball section. but also some said you can put angles in with discus and the stingray. ?? Do discus like allot of water movement or very little? What do they like to eat? and can hatchet fish be put in with them?

My reason for all these ? are I really like the discus and the stingrays I have read allot about both of them. but different books say the complete opposite on some things and I would just like to know what worked for people that have these fish. I am having a hard time finding any thin else that is calm enough for the discus and big enough not to be lunch for the stingray so any suggestions are greatly appreciated

I wouldnt put Discus with Stingrays. They just dont go. Im sure someone can give you a more detailed reason.
Some people keep them with Angels and the Angels can be quite boisterous to the Discus and get to food alot quicker. You can give it a go but do so with caution. Good filtration is needed but the tank shouldnt have a strong current, they like everything calm. Discus eat most prepared foods and should be offered bloodworm, brineshimp and also occasionaly vegetables. Discus should be fine with Hatchet fish. A hood is advised so your Hatchets dont carpet surf.

Any other comments from people?

No, sadly you cannot put a stingray with your Discus. The stingray will actually "bounce" at the Discus. I don't see how hatchets would be a problem. Angels and Discus are probably the most debated idea on this forum. Personally i'm all for it. Make sure your doing a lot of water changes and a good amount of feeding as Angels are a lot more greedy eaters then Discus.

personally i would keep stingrays with discus. i cant see any problems at all. i don't understand what "bounce" at the discus is supposed to be. filtration. i cant see what harm proper filtration does to discus either. i think this is very misleading. it makes people think that they have to understrength filter their tanks and this can lead to problems. all fish need, deserve clean looking free of many particles as possible and also clean of any toxins. i keep discus in a juwel 400L tank plus an eheim 2224 as well. just use plants and bogwood to break up the flow. discus are never going to sit in the flow anyway

Im not saying I dont believe what people are saying
but I was wondering if the people who reply have had discus or stingrays or if they have? is that why they are saying that or is it from research. like I said I have no problem listening to every one and there reasons I dont want to spend $150 on a stingray and $40-plus on discus and find out they are bad for each other and die so any imput is fine with me but if you could tell me why you think what you think or if you have had any of these together or apart would be great.

As of now I don't own Discus, I will shortly. I do own angelfish and work at a pet store that have both Discus and stingrays in stock. thegnu, i've heard of more experinced members saying that the stingray will actually try to get at the Discus or bounce at them, but someone may need to clarify this. And we aren't saying that Discus shouldn't have adequate filtration. Discus have a very deep body shape and aren't suited for fast flowing currents. There natural habitat doesn't have an extremely high current either. If you can some how put something around the outflow of the filter (plants, decor, ect.) this may help to re direct the current and result in a less harsh environment.

a LFS that i frequent keeps stingray and discus together and they don't have any problems. i would like to keep stingrays in with my discus but i don't think my tank is big enough, and my tank is 5 feet long and almost 2 feet wide. i say its not big enough because i have big pieces of bogwood and lots of plants and the stingrays would not be able to lay on the bottom without curling up their disc and i would never keep my discus in a bare tank like breeders do. my discus are my pets. I'm not interested in overfeeding them and siphoning out uneaten food every day just to get them huge. and i assure you my discus are growing huge anyway. also i like gravel in my tank. stingrays need sand. you might like to think about some of these points before making your mind up

I don't mean to be offensive, but what was the point of saying that when you didn't know what it meant>? :shifty:

I was told that sting rays can be in with small pebble stone they dont have to have sand and right now I have to big green fake plants like the ones that are for on the top of the water and I used suction cups to hold them to the back of the tank. so they are not on the bottom of the tank and I have some drift wood in there on the bottom I also have some bigger rock caves but I will have to take them out I think but I was going to put my sevrums in the tank and do larger chiclids but I decided not to so it has plants and the bottom is going to have alot of room I dont want to breed them I have no reason to and I like them as pets so that is why I would like things that work well together and that fit in my tank and I dont just want a glass bottom tank with nothing in it but one stingray not that there is any thing wrong with that it just is not for me. please let me know any other point you may have so I dont leave any thing out Thanks for the help so far

The flow can "beat up" the discus which is very stressfull.

There are so many bottom feeding fish that you can cosider in with discus like Corydoras and L Plecs etc. There are loads of Tetras that shoal and swim in the middle and hatchets are fine for the top. Rams are fine and some of the dwarf cichlids like the apistos. I can't see how you can consider a stingray in with discus as you are looking to replicate an amazonian tank with your discus and those that i have mentioned, your discus temperature would be up at 84 86 mark so you have to consider what fish tolerate those conditons. I would do your research thoroughly.

Why can you not understaind why I am considering a stingray with discus ? As stated in the post about stingray in the oddball section the temp should be at 81-84 and some of them need warmer so if I got the right kind of ray what does temp have to do with it?
