Is 'black' or 'very dark' sand available?... what's it known as?...

i've got black quartzite in both my tanks. where are you!?

Is that sand or gravel?... I prefer sand...

There are 2 different types of black gravels available to hobbyists. One is called Tahitan Moonsand (which is a sand) and the other is called Black Coal Aquarium Gravel made by Hagen - this has a grain size of 3-4mm.

Hope this helps

mines a course sand grain size between a mm and 2mm. this is probably the best pic i have. the yellow bits are baby snails!

I have fine gravel at the minute in my tank but have been thinking of maybe going with a dark coloured SAND, but I'm concerned my 'Syhon Pyhon' will suck the sand up because it is not as heavy as gravel?

I have Silica sand in my tanks... Its a good grain size: doesn't 'waft' up into the water and is still small enough for the Corys barbules... it has little bits of darker and lighter grain in too, so it is not all one colour - looks nice and natural... easy to clean too imo... I hold a syphon 5-10mm above the sand... all the sh*t gets sucked up but the Silica sand stays down...

i dont have a problem with mine i can dig it into the sand like you would with gravel, you have to be a bit carefull but its not like play sand where you have to hold it above and swirl it round. which is why i changed my small tank from play sand to this stuff
