Hi there

Two of my mollies gave birth last week to a massive batch of fry, both gave birth on the same day, I transferred the fry into their own tank, have lost quite a few which I expected, but am hoping the ones I have left will survive...now for the questions...lol......how long before I can sex them? Also was a black molly that gave birth and a marbled one, some of the fry are totally white, some look like they will be like the marbled mum, and the others are dark, but not black, they appear to be more of a brown in colour, will they get darker? Also some look to have a more defined dorsal fin, would this show at an early age and could they be sailfin mollies?

Ok hope someone can answer my questions...would be much appreciated as I am a beginner to the hobby.

about 3 months before you can sex them

the different colours are from different coloured parent genetics. The males could have been any colour and this can mean some young will be like dad, some like mum, and some a mixture.

the dorsal fin can vary considerably on the fish. Some have a bigger fin and others will be smaller. You will have to wait for a few months to see what they turn into.

You can sex livebearers after 1 month (this is the time it takes for the gonopodium to grow.)

It can take longer but usually 2 months max before its easily visible enough to see.

When it comes to the dorsal fin, i agree with what col said.
