A Coldwater Plec!

Hiya,

as some of you know i went to pets at home last saturday and got many things to make my tropical tank look amazing (and it does!)

Anyway my little sister took on my dads fish (my parents split up 10 years ago) as my dad was moving to a new house and didnt want the 2 goldfish he had anymore so my little sister decided to have them.) one is still alive now, must be about 6 now! and then the other died about 1 month after so she decided to get 2 other fish for company. Anyway when we were at pets at home we was looking at some of the other coldwater fishes and we came across some coldwater plec!? we had never came across freshwater plec in all our lives, though im sure i have heard of them before. anyway i was trying to look for her this morning (my sister has named her "sally!" sally the plec! ) and i couldnt find her anywhere! i thought great! and then she suddenly appeard out of nowhere! she is so cute, but a little odd looking to me, shes about the same size as my ottos, just she looks like a little browny and her fins are stuck on the glass aswell! shes pretty funny to look at, shannon loves her!

she has named her fish the funny names of:
. rhiannon the fish, because she wanted to call the fish shannon (her name?) and so i explained that if she wasnt going to be shannon she was going to be rhiannon, so she decided shed call the fish the name she was going to be called instead of what she was called
.Ariel the fish (because thats little mermaids name and she loves that film.)
. And flounder because flounder is little mermaids best fish friend!

and can you even put a kissing fish and plec in the same tank as two big goldish? this looks cruel to me, but what do i know? is this right? :

the tank is far too small for all those fish i'm afraid. Goldfish produce alot of waste and I personally believe that that tank is too small for even 1 of those fish.

yes, i thought so too, that tank on the link isnt mine btw, i found it whilst trying to find a pic of sally lookalike on the interntet to show you

you did mean the tank on the link didnt you? and is it possible to keep a kissing fish with a goldfish anyway?

I presume by Kissing Fish, you mean a Gourami?


In which case, no I am afraid not. Gouramis are Tropical and need temperatures of 24-28 degrees celcius, something a Goldfish won't like.

as stated above goldfish are big waste producers and get big so minimum for 1 gold fish alone would be 20gallon but bigger is better and with an adequet filter ....the "plec" in the link u supplied isnt actually a plec its a loach (hillstream loach) and yeh are coldwater fish so u will be fine with him in the goldfish tank.

The 'coldwater plec' is a species of Hillstream Loach, sometimes sold as Butterfly plecs or Hong Kong plecs.
These are specialist fish that need very good water conditions and more importantly very high oxygen levels which makes them unsuitable for you average goldfish aquarium.

good old p@h they sold my daughter one of these months ago with her goldfish,i take care of them as she came back home with her tank.anyway i put a pump in there loads of movement,and the little things fit,really fast,and it dont bother the goldfish at all,its at the food first,eats its fill and goes and sits on the top of the casle,i wrote about this little fish in another post,and a few said these where tropical,well this ones not hes happy,and comes to the front of the tank when the big fella bangs on the tank,it eats peas,wafers,whatever i drop in there its on it munching away.theres only that in there with the goldfish,its a bow front,and its not cold anyway as its in the kitchen on the worktop,,kenny

EMERGENCEY!!!!!!

i have just been moving some rocks around in the tank and i think the little fellar got into the rock! it has lotos of tubes leading to the top but no exit, just the way in at the bottom, if the poor fellas got up there will he be able to come out? i hope sally will manige! shannon will kill me if she sees her dead! i put the rock flat down next to the plant as we are away at the weekend!? omg! wot am i going to do!? theres nothing i can do! i cant see the blooming fish if shes in the rock or out she kinda blends in with everything! help!!!

iam sure if he got in he will get out,place the rock so it can get to the hole,ours is under anything i move i tend to swish wood rock before i put it backdown.i hope its ok,,keny
