So, my friend was chatting on the phone with me and he asked what kind of shark I had. I told him, bala. but it isn't really a shark.

He might get a tank, but I probably could do his matinence for 5 dollars a week. (He's really rich, ;S)
Our store only stocks 55g at the most, so what sharks could I get that are small? Territorial is okay, just list a possible stocking for either 30G, or 55G.

RTBS -- 6" max, right? :p And, he also is interested in eels. I dont think any eels could fit, but if there is any then go ahead and tell! (If not, i'll just supply him with some loaches. :))

I think rtbs and rainbows are your only options. Though I don't recall off hand the max size on the rainbows.

i cant think of any eels that would work but having said that i know sod all about eels. bala sharks wont work as they grow very big and like to be in groups.

rtbs need to be kept as the only shark in the tank as they are super aggressive to their own kind. also with rtbs they get more aggressive as they grow so tankmates would need to be robust. also i wouldnt say 30g was suitable for adult rtbs id go 55g minimum. altho my rtbs was in my 100g tank and still wasnt big enough as he just wanted the whole thing for his own.

I believe rainbows only get to 3 inches, am i correct in thinking that? I had a RTBS once( beautiful fish) in a 30g. THen i tried to buy another, and they gave me one with a hunched back, or it appeared that way( not fish TB) and it only grew to 3 inches. I looked like a RTBS, but colors weren't as strong. I think it was a rainbow shark.

they have the same temperament as the rtbs, and are not suggested to be kept in groups. ive been lucky with rtybs in the past, but its not recommended.

Rainbow Sharks grow to be more than 3 inches, mine's about 4 so far.

Both RTB and Rainbow sharks can get to 6" although most usually only get to 4"-5"

In a 55G a small group of Peacock Eels should be ok, provided there is a sand substrate

My rainbow shark ("Billy") is 5inches at present. When he was in a community tank with peaceful fish, he became very dominant, aggressive, territorial etc (just like a RTBS) - basically a real bully that would torture the life out of other fish.

But I found that putting him in with my pink short-bodied convicts brought him down a peg or two as the convicts won't take any nonsense from any other fish as they rule the tank! So, this set up has proved successful for me because the Rainbow has nobody to bully - and as long as he stays in his part of the tank and doesn't poke his nose into the convicts business, then the convicts leave him alone.

I used to wonder why all my 1-inch clown loaches were dying, it seemed at night especially, my rainbow shark would terrorize the lil fellas..so i moved the rainbow to my cichlid tank and no issues, except now it chases my 3-4" clown loaches at night...if this don't stop when i get the 6footer, then the rainbow will have to go...i think at night it sees the clowns and as they look a lil similar to the rainbow (shape and black (in the dark)) went for em...so i would advise 1 shark and nothing else that resembles it

yeah, okay.
:p if one shark, whats the minimum sized tank? :)

I think the shark idea wouldn't work with him then. peacock eels, i'll look em up.
@55g, or 30g. Severums? :)
or what else? labs? Electric Blue Rams? Would any of those work with a 55? (I'm a cichlid newbie. ): Barely know anything about them. heck, i dont even know how to pronounce 'cichlid'

If you don't get anything too aggressive kuhli loaches are a neat little fish that look like eels. a nice sized group would be fine in a 30g.

:p yeah, i thought of kuhli's.
I'm thinking of peacock's right now, then some weathers like mine. :)

@ krib : thanks man, thats what I thought! :D

ugh, man. I noticed how I actually got a few of my friends into the fishkeeping hobby. 8-| And they're doing great at it! :) One has a 5g, other has a 10g, so does the other and the other. :)
