Can any african cichlids live in a 29 gallon?

Actually you could keep one species of the smaller mbuna or some of the smaller Tangs or smaller river species e.g. A thomasi but not a Malawi comunity.

So not even a harem of one particular fish, such as maybe electric yellows, will go in a 29 gallon?

Edit: am only looking into africans as a possibility for spare 30 gallon I have...

You could go with a harem of yellow labs (labidochromis caeruleus) w/1m:4f. Just make sure you have TONS of rockwork for caves, and be prepared for lots of fry. I have the same set up, and I just stripped 18 fry from one of my girls.

Just make sure you get a pair, meaning a male and a female that have paired off for spawning, otherwise you will have death and destruction in your tank. One way of doing this is to purchase the known pair from a reputable dealer (not a fish store chain), or you can get 3-4 juveniles, when they mature and two pair off, you rehome the rest. Good luck, I've always like angel tanks, I'm sure it will be stunning.
