Tank inhabitants: 2 dwarf rainbows, 10 rasboras, 6 silver tip tetras, 7 rumny nose tetras, 2 bristle nose plecos, 5 cardinals. Added 10 cardinals a week ago and have lost my original 5 plus 6 of the new ones in a week.

Didn't notice any symptoms in the cardinals, just find 1 or 2 dead in the morning. Now one of my rainbow fish is sick, has lost color in the lower rear portion of the body (see photo), seems weak, difficulty swimming. After scouring all my books, I suspect Neon's disease, although everything I've read says cardinals are resistant. I've removed the rainbow from the tank. Does anybody have any ideas on what to do? Should I euthanize the rainbow or is there some treatment? Can I treat the tank? Should I remove the remaining cardinals as they seem to have been the carriers? Thanks.

Sounds like a bacterial infection to me, no signs of flicking and rubbing objects.
Have they also bloated up with not being able to maintain there balance.
Not sure but i think cardinals can get ntd if they were kept with neon tetras, the cardinals are not the carries of it like neons tetras.
You can get that scale look with columnaris bleached out scales, but it can be a sign of other things too.

I've noticed the largest rumny nosed has a discolored patch and is sort of flickering, hanging on the bottom of the tank away from the others and the other rainbow is not eating and flickering a bit. Some of the others didn't eat as well so whatever it is seems to be spreading. No bloating or red streaks. Any suggestions on what to treat with? I've got furan-2, melafix and pimafix also have clout, metronadozole and ich attach(naphthoquinone).

I don't think it's costia or columnaris. The discolored area is internal not external. I noticed a few ich-like spots on the one rumny nose so I started treating with ich attack, I think it's comparable to Protozin, supposedly takes care of protozoans, dino-flagellates and other internal parasites.

2 died on Saturday including the one with the white patch, I think it was a secondary infection. I did a 50% water change, cleaned the filters, even though tank was pretty clean and water quality was good. Another was whirling about on Sunday and died abruptly.

On the positive side, the rainbow has started eating again, so I think he's feeling better some of the other tetras are still flickering a bit but no other external signs of disease. There seems to be one that isn't feeling well, I'll have to wait and see, I'm hoping the worst is over, Thanks for your help.

Yes the med should be fine, hope they make it now at least you know its a parasite now, good luck.
