Hello fishery men n women,

My tank has nearly finished it's fishless cycle and it's time to get serious about who's going to inhabit this new and exciting water world....

Its my first time as a fish keeper and I haven't got a clue were to start, but here is what I would like...

As large of a community as possible for my 90 litre tank
- top middle & bottom

A centre piece (or two)
A colourful & playful shoal
A tank cleaning friendly & interesting character
A purple/pink fish (essential for my daughter)

Like I say, I am new and any advice is very welcome

Cheers...

You could do this

1 pair of blue gouramis
2 Sword Tails
5 Cory catfish
5 Rosy barbs/ Flame Tetra

This should be okay bio-load wise. If you feel not you could take out the Sword tails because I just threw them in there. ;)

 You could get different colored gouramis so they look purple. ;)

There are very few pink or purple fish :/ :( If there were, I'd have tankfuls!

Most of the 'pink' fish are albinos and many aren't suitable for community tanks; like pink convicts and kissing gouramis; rosy barbs get too big for a 90l too, I'm afraid.

How about; 6 or 8 blind cave tetras (sort of pink and very interesting), a trio of sparkling gouramis, 6 or 8 of one of the pygmy corydoras and an albino bristlenose.

The baby doesn't like the Albino Bristlenose, she said 'EEEeeeee' ha, think I'm liking the Gourami's, so there a 1st choice up to now.

So my list is :
Dwarf Gourami x2

Now I need to find them mates....

I like Betta's... Can they go together?
I like Guppies

I want a little chubby fat funny looking fish, so we can point and laugh at him/her but secretly love him/her the most ha...

I'm afraid bettas, gouramis and guppies can't be kept together, in any combination; they mistake the other fish for their own species (they're not the brightest of fish!) and get aggressive; you'll have to pick the one you (or your daughter!) likes the most :)

She's only 2, she likes all three, there's just no reasoning with her.... Will prob go for the gourami's as they have more colours going on....

Am Looking at these at the Mo.....

4 x Panda CoryDoras or 4 x Julii CoryDoras

Purple Cichild

Male Dwarf Gourami

I have been looking up fish and have came up with these on my 'hit list'

Panda CoryDoras/Julii CoryDoras

Purple Cichild

Male Dwarf Gourami

Dwarf Flag Cichlid

Blackfin Pearl Killifish

YoYo Loach

Neon Tetra

Angel Fish

So I want a Community, I am not saying I'm getting all of these, but if anyone can advise or give me some possiblities of combinations, that'll be great

The Panda's or Julli's would be a good option for your tank, but 6+ is widely considered a minimum for any species of Corydora. Sand or other fine grain substrate is recommended to stop damage to the barbs around their mouths, as they spend most of the their time with the heads in the sand looking for food :) 6 would leave you room for something else, 10 would put you practically at MAX stocking. If i remember correctly, REAL Julli's are hard to come by, and when you do, its likely not a Julli but a False Julli, or something else. Easily confused, there are many that look similar.

Loaches can grow huge and again need friends. I think they're a straight up no no due to the size of your tank. (Posted something similar recently. Although to a newbie a 90ltr tank is an awesome big project, in reality, a lot of people have quarantine/hospital tanks and sump tanks bigger than this. 90l is considered a small fish tank) Groups of 4-6+

Neon Tetra live in HUGE schools in the wild, from 100's, to more than 10,000 to a school, and so need to be in groups of a minimum of 12 really. Not impossible in your tank, but this alone is a good chunk again, of your "allowance"

Angels can potentially grow rather large as well. Its common to buy 6 (This will max your tanks stocking) and wait for two to pair off and rehome the rest. Normally i would rule these straight out in a 90ltr, but you didn't post the dimensions of your tank. For Angels, 18" is commonly cited as the minimum depth for them.

I hope this helps!

EDIT: Spelling :/

Purple Cichild - Kribensis, not ideal to keep a lone one, most people aim for a breeding pair then sell or give away the fry to local shops. However, in tank that size, although possible, you would not be able to have any corys, there simply wouldnt be enough space for them along with breeding kribs. they get very agressive and would "own" the bottom of the tank and in some cases they have been known to pluck out corys eyes.

Angels....tank isnt big enough in my opinion.

cant comment on others, never kept, although neons obviously fine but large numbers needed for them to be remotely interesting.

If you want dwarf gouramis, I would go for a single male - you could do a harem (1 male two duller-coloured, smaller females) but that might be pushing it a bit too much in a two footer. They would be nice centerpieces patrolling the tank. Then 6 or so cories of ONE species, whichever you prefer, and a shoal of small, peaceful-ish tetras. Neons would be fine, but it would be a very 'blue' tank, so maybe something in a contrasting colour to the gouramis. Ember tetras would be lovely, and they're little enough that you can get a decent sized shoal togetherr in that size tank too. Or something flashy like endlers, perhaps, although they will be even less likely to shoal than tetras.
