Ok i have totally changed my mind over what to put in my 75g

ok here is my plan

75g

1 tiger oscar
1 firemouth
1 male convict
1 female convict
3 silver dollars
Some type of cleanup crew to help keep the tank clean (Suggestions welcomed)

I am going to breed the convicts for a source of food for my oscar

is this setup up ok

A 75g tank is minimum for an oscar on it's own, so just the oscar in that tank.

On your other tankmate suggestions, SD's are shoaling fish which mean 6+.

You won't be able to breed convicts as the only food supply for the oscar you will need to feed it pellets etc. aswel.

:good:

ok yes i know that i will need to feed the oscars dry food (i am taking out half the fry to put in my empty 10 gallon and leaving half in as food)

and that is a good point abouit the SDs (if i take out the silver dollars can i add a common pleco???)

thanks much

Well you could get some kind of plec I wouldn't get a common though as they grow 2'+ and would outgrow the tank.

You could fit an oscar and a plec in a 75g if it had very good filteration and you did good cleanings of the tank weekly.

:good:

I would go with an oscar, and one other smallish cichlid... pleco and oscar poo in the same tank is nasty... they're both poo machines..

A pair of convicts should never be kept with any other fish, as they attack all other fish in the tank when breeding, without exception. When your convicts breed, they will kill the firemouth and the silver dollars, and the oscar as well unless it is nearly full grown and big enough to not be killed by their attacks. Keeping an oscar with a breeding pair of convicts in order to use the convict fry as a food source for the oscar is ridiculous, and the combination will put stress on both the oscar and the convicts.

Silver dollars are active fish, and I feel a 4' tank is too small for a shoal of them, but you could keep about 6 if you had no other fish.

In the same way, I wouldn't put an oscar in a 75-gallon tank, but you could if you were sure to make large water changes each week.

What do you mean when you say "keep the tank clean"? There are lots of fish that eat algae, but none of them will do as good a job as you can with an algae scraper or pad. Algae growth is not a problem if you clean the inside of the glass weekly, and it certainly isn't reason enough by itself to get a large pleco.

If I was going to include cichlids in a 75g tank, I would probably get a single green acara, a single firemouth, and 12-16 tiger barbs. Healthy specimens of these fish would be an impressive sight. I would also be sure to do a large water change every week.

Whatever you decide to do, try to resist the urge to overstock your tank, and do research about the fishes' needs before you get any.
