Im using the siesta method, keeping my nitrates at 5ppm VIA dosing KNO3 daily, dosing excel daily, and elbow grease to fight the algae. I scrub off as much as i can before a water change then change the water to get rid of the stuff i scrubed off. Its gotten a bit better.

How do i perform an excel dip? Is i 1 part excel and 10 part water or is it the other way around? My amazon swords are getting a lot of algae on them and i want to get rid of it.

Depends on the algae I guess, not so sure on an Excel dip to be honest, but Excel only gets rid of hair algae :)

I recently started dosing my 180litre which was over run with a lot of hair algae. I did a 40% water change first, then followed the instructions (large initial dose then daily). after 4 or 5 days the hair algae was dying off fast. Its been about 2 weeks now and I have none left (other than some dead stuff stuck beneath some plants - soon to be gone)

its green, and its hairy, and i can manually remove it off the glass, not sure about manually removing off the plant though, i tried it but accidentally ripped the leaf.

I already lost my java moss to it, i came back from vacation to find the long hairy strands all over it...

Sounds very much like hair algae. I have a small tank that I've neglected - got it planted up and was cycling it, then broke the cycle. Anyway, it is riddled with hair algae as was my large tank. I'm dosing it with Flourish Excel to get rid of the algae now :)

I found that winding it in on a toothbrush was quite good for removing it en mass, but you'll never get rid of it all like that unfortunately. Theres a very good description of various algae, including thread/hair algae here:

yep its hair algae.... Do blackouts help? Im leaving for vacation tomorrow for 6 days, should i do a 6 day blackout or is that too dangerous for the plants?

Don't think blackouts help so much for hair algae. Its more of a nutrient/co2 imbalance. 6 days might be too much for your plants :(

ok then no black out. I'll see what happens if i dose more excel and ferts. My pleco is getting rid of it as fast as it can but the pleco is still small and its belly is always bulging (not dropsy bulging but full bulging) and the pleco keeps pooping (well it is in their nature)

its a brittlenose plec

excel killed it :) Now i have cyano, yay!!! :(:(:( I guess this is the consequences of not having a CO2 unit....
