I just finished setting up my 75 gal tank and I'm looking at filtration. I have a Emperor 400 already but I want to add a canister filter. I was thinking some where in the $125.00 range. I've never had a canister type filter and I was hoping someone could give me insight into a good one, ease of cleaning and cost for replacing filters an so on....Thanks!

Just my opinion of course, but I'd get a Rena Filstar XP3 aka XPL.  It supposedly has enough filtration for 175 gallons, it's quiet and easy to use & clean.  I have one of these on my 36 gallon bowfront and it's been awesome.  I bought that filter used on craigslist for $60 but they only cost about $125 or so on Amazon, in fact I did a quick search and Big Al's online has them for $104 plus $10 shipping.

I liked my XP3 so much that I bought a XP2 brand new & I paid less than $75 via Amazon with no tax & free shipping!  I think it was only $60.............

The older ones are marked XP1, XP2, XP3 & XP4 and the newer ones are called XPS, XPM, XPL & XPXL with the only real difference being that the new ones don't come with all the accessories such as spray bar, flow control valve, etc.

if you don't want to go the route Ruskull mentioned have a look at Aquatop on amazon. Their filter line has some good reviews and they are pretty cheap to boot. Mind you, I don't believe they come with any media so keep that into your budget as well. I can't speak from experience but I think pretty soon I will be

I'm going to check both out, I do a lot of shopping on Amazon so I'll see what they have...thanks again!
