I have been away from the hobby for some time, but with a new store opening up in town I am excitedly looking at getting back into it.

I have a 75 Gallon tank I would like to set up for some Altolamprologus compressiceps as the primary species, and am curious as to how many would do well in a 75 gallon along with some tank mate options.

I'll leave it to others who are more familiar with rift cichlids than I to answer your question. Just wanted to welcome you and share @Back in the fold's wonderment about a fish shop in the Yukon. I assume it is in Whitehorse?

My father was born in Ft. Yukon in what was then Alaska Territory.

I have the insular dwarf variety of Altolamprologus compressiceps. They’re incredibly cute in an ugly sort of way. This variant doesn’t get larger than one and a half to 2 inches. It is not a man-made dwarf. This species is an ambush hunter. It hides in rock crevices. It has been proposed that its dwarf stature is from many generations of selection in a part of Lake Tanganyika, where the rock crevices are very small. Only the tiny altos could survive and propagate. I have a pair in a 60 gallon tank along with a pair of j. transcriptus and four n. multifasciatus.

I’m not familiar with that species but I’m absolutely stunned that an aquarium store would be opening in the Yukon . The hobby is indeed vast and far reaching .

We have always had at least 1 local pet store selling fish, when I was a child we had 2 until 1 guy decided to close up and go into other business ventures, leaving only the 1. By the time I was making my own money to blow on the hobby another had opened and was really good, and they eventually converted from pet store to strictly fish store, but the owners left town and the lady who bought it didn't know anything about fish (I still remember her telling a customer a 1.5" Jack Dempsey was going to stay that size and be a good community tankmate, I had to interject and prevent that disaster) and ran it into the ground and the guy who bought it from her was just as clueless and he did even worse, leaving us with the same old pet store we've always had. The problem with the long lasting pet store was they made most of their money in dog harnesses and treated the fish like an afterthought so I tried to shop there as little as possible and totally cut them off when I found them removing expiration dates from medications. Well the owners finally decided to just retire and close the business earlier this year leaving us with no stores for the first time I can remember. Just waiting for this new store to get their retail location so I can see how serious they are before I fully jump in.
