USA,
I bought a blue ram female today, who ive named Beatrice, and was wondering if she would be okay in a 7.6 ph water. If she does die, and that ph is too high for them, would a bolivian be better?

If I'm not mistaken Blue Rams prefer a lower ph, but I've had some in my tank with a ph over 8 and they did fine. Depending on the ph of the Lfs, they should be able to acclimatize to your ph. I'm not sure about Bolivian rams, but there probably similar to the Blue Rams.

I read the sticjy topic and it said that 7.6 was good bolivians

from what i've heard, basic pH levels inhibit ram eggs from hatching. the adult fish can be sucessfully acclimated, but they won't be able to hatch any fry.

The vast majority of Rams we all buy from our LFS's have spawned, hatched and been raised in standard pH waters (around 7 - 7.5) and so know absolutely no different.

Only those that are caught from the wild will have problems with differing pH ranges because thats what they are used to.

Your ram will be fine  . I have a pair of Blues in my community tank. I have made no compromises on behalf of them and they are thriving.

With reference to Pica's comment...they have spawned twice and whilst the eggs have not hatched, this is more down to lack of experience than anything else.

It is very common for Rams to have to spawn a good few times before they get it right and the eggs hatch.

the ram wasnt looking that good in the begining, but she is doing good now, not as colorful as she was at the lfs, but I think a fish may be nipping her. I believe that it may be the tetras, and probably will be moving her to my 20 gallon tank, but the heater doesnt work in it and the temp is only 74 f. This is the seconf heater in the tank though that doesnt work, so it may just be the outlet.

Hmmm guess it sounds like 7.8 will be fine but I'd put some bogwood in there so that it will lower your pH to a lower 7. That way you wouldn't have to use chemicals. Did you check to make sure that the difference between your pH and the pH of the water the ram came in wasn't too different? That might be why the ram wasn't doing to well in the beginning (fish are sensitive to pH changes i.e. they should be done gradually)

I moved the ram to my 20 gallon because the tetras were nipping its tail away. Actually it was all gone. I never knew von rio tetras were so nippy! The water from the store was at 6 for the ph though, which may be why the ram isnt looking that well. i didnt see her yet today though, but I do hope that she is alive.

The tank that she is in now has 10 guppies ( very small fry),2 platties(1 fry), 2 swordtails (1 fry), and 3 corrie cats. So I am thinking about lowering the ph, as they should be able to handel the low PH as well. I am thinking about making it 7 and getting her a male.

How would I go about lowering the PH in the tank? I have never done this before, and always just use the tap water PH.

A thing that i did notice though on the PH tester, the color for the 7.2 and 7.6 are almost IDENTICAL, so I am not 100 percent sure though that it is 7.6, but mostly sure.
