55g

I probably wouldn't keep a rd in a 55, I suppose it could be done till it starts getting bigger, but that is JMO, the end story is that you will have alot of differing opinions and like I said for a 55 I wouldn't go with a fish that has the potential to get over 10 inches unless you are willing to use the 55 as a growout tank.

Exactly my point.

Yup, thats fine as long as in does get moved!! I wonder how many people buy Oscars to put them un a 20g, and say "yeah, I'll get a bigger tank soon", then never do, and end up having to take the fish back to the LFS!!
Not saying you would David, just wondering how many do?!!

like i said everybody has there opinions
the smallest i have kept an oscar in is 60g and he is 6inch which is fine in my opinion-but people are always going to disagree!

Like i have said before specialists like mary bailey say that the minimum size tank for even a fully grown oscar is 36" x 18" x 12"!!! I dont agree with this but this is the words of a cichlid specialsist who has done years of extensive research into them!!!

BTW 48x18x18 (the general height of tanks in this footprint) is 67g
if the tank is 18" deep, and 48" long, then it would be 14" wide to be 55g!!! Not an opinion, maths!!!

By also using maths!!! lmao
i work out 48" x 18" x 18" is 56.25g to be exact,
and 48" x 18" x 14" is actually 43.75g!!!

perhaps Perry if you specified if you were using UK or US gallons it would be helpful because according to my maths the demisions for the tank come out to 56.06 UK gallons while in US gallons is 67.32 gallons. so you can see where the confusion comes into play. so while a tank that is 48x18x18 would be fine for an oscar.

im using UK gallons and you worked out the same as me!
I dont think we can be accurate as our results were only 0.19 out-lol

no i would sey you could keep an oscar in 55g and yes if you get the right one thoughs fish have some of the most distinct personalities ....for instance my dad had one for years and i love hearing stories about it ............ but its up to u :kana:

Yup, perry I was using US gallons simply because that is the general unit most people on this forum use!! You're right with the measurements in UK gallons, but that is the equivalent of my dimensions in US!!
Should've said so in my original post, sorry for the confusion!!

BTW, it's actually 14.7 inches wide as well!!!!! if we're being exact!!

lol, o rite!
well i automatically assumed you was doing your measurements in UK gallons as your from england but never mind ay! :D
Cheers for the exact rsults-lmao

Edit- o and i agree willywonka!!! lol, but like i keep saying people will always disagree -every1 has there opinions
