I want to set up my 55g long tank for puffers.

1) Can green spotted and figure 8 puffers co-exist? They are both brackish, right?

2) What kind of bottom substrate is most ideal? Gravel, sand or crushed coral?

3) Would power filter create current too strong for puffers?

4) Is possible to create a snail colony for puffers to hunt?

5) How many of these puffers should I keep?

Thank you in advance.

  1. Sometimes, it depends on individual temperaments, but I wouldn't recommend it.
  2. Sand
  3. no, these puffers like a current.
  4. yes, but not as an exclusive food, you simply wouldn't be able to breed them fast enough and the puffers need a varied diet anyway.
  5. maximum six f8s or three GSPs
/edited for clarification.

1) No, GSP's get larger then figure 8's and GSP's go full marine while figure 8's don't

2) Crushed Coral will make the water harder which is good for puffers

3) They like strong currents

4) You can breed snails in a seperate tank and then feed them to your puffers, they don't really "hunt them" more then eat them as soon as you drop them in

5) I think a pair of GSP's in 55 gallons is ideal, for figure 8's maybe 3 or 4

Hope that helps

only 3 or 4 GSP's in 55G tank? but these guys are so tiny! how big do they get? i've yet to see any over 1.5".

According to mongabay they both can grow to 8"!

But I think the norm in an aquarium is up to 10cm and they are slow growing.
