Yes, 5-6 would work well, but make sure you research them and can meet their requirements.

yh you could but remember the 55 us only 12 inches wide and discus can grow to 9 inches long ;)

well hes not given us the dimentions so iv assumed tht its a started 55 :p

yeah not all 55gs are 12"high mine is 18":) but yeah make sure that you can meet their requirements, also make sure you get the smaller discus as their are ones that get larger than 12".

do you have the names of discus that gets larger than 12"?
i am considering getting some discus and will avoid those that will get larger than 12"

There aren't different species of Discus, just colour forms. They should all reach the same size if kept well, 6-8" is about right, but it can vary slightly as with all fish. I don't think you'll see many Discus at all reach 12" and upwards.

have you seen the actual discus or just pictures from the breeders?

I think many breeders include the tail in the length (rather than using standard measures) basically to make the fish sound bigger and therefore get more for it... to be cynical. So long as they make it clear somewhere then it's fair enough, I s'pose. Hence an 11" discus including the tail would be a 10" discus without tail, which would still be a really good size - way bigger than average discus keeper would manage to grow them on to.
