What are you water stats? Cichlids thrive more in hard water and high ph where as tetras like softer water.

A good mix of fish might include 4 or 5 Bleeding Heart Tetras, 1 Silver Dollar, 1 Green Severum Cichlid, 2 Pictus Catfish.

A good mix of African fish would be, 6 to 8 Congo Tetras, a pair of Pelv. pulcher
Kribensis, 2 or 3 Upside Down Catfish.

I wouldn't mix the cichlids with the community fish. Most are way to aggressive but some have had luck with it. Also what types of cichlids does your dad want central american or african. the africans like the water harder than the central americans. Also there diets very greatly.

Prime example of what NOT to put in your tank, sadly.

An oscar alone needs 75g. Add the other fish and you're looking at about 125-150g.

In a 55g, a couple of angels (or other small/medium cichlids such as Rainbow Cichlids, Keyholes), a shoal of tetras (Columbian tetras are lovely, don't go for anything too small in ase they become angel food), some cories and a small species of plec (not a common plec). That would look lovely if you set it up in a natural looking way, planted, etc.

A Dwarf Cichlid community would look lovely in it too.

In your original post you said you had all of those, derrrr.

Seriously though - if someone's starting with a fresh slate, they don't need fish that would be crammed in a tank that size. You might be happy putting all your fish in one, but it's not a good idea and that's what I was saying.

75g is the more widely accepted recomended absolute minimum for one oscar, never mind the others as well.
