Hello. I'm getting a 55 gallon tank soon and need some stocking ideas. I like goldfish angelfish and Bala sharks. Here are my ideas:
Option 1:
3-4 fancy goldfish

Option 2:
6 angels
Tetras
Corries

Option 3:
Bala sharks 3-4?
Ideas for tankmates?

Any other ideas?
How wild you stock a 55 gallon tank?

Angelfish need at least 45cm of water depth, which your 55g might not have.

Bala Sharks reach ~40cm and should be kept in groups of at least six, ideally more, to reduce skittishness. Absolute minimum 9x3x3 foot tank, a tank size many of us can only dream of owning!

My current 240l is an oddball setup: 1 African Butterfly Fish; 1x Golden Wonder Killifish; 4x Hoplo Catfish; 4x Pyjama Synodontis; 1x "Giant Oto"; ~19x Rabbit Snails. Could put the 4x Leopard Bushfish back in, but I'm verging on another juggle to account for my ~35 Lionhead Cichlid youngsters and my 5 Ilyodon xantusi fry.

Setups I would love to do at some point in a 55g include...
  • A Tanagnyikan cichlid community (a shell dweller hareem probably "Dwarf Sumbu", a rock cave pair/trio possibly Julidochromis dickfeldi; a pair/trio of roaming Neolamprologus punctatus; possibly a school of open water Cyprichromis (or their smaller cousins)
  • A heaterless "temperate" tank (eg. Paradise Fish; Peppered Corydoras; WCMM; Zebra Danio; Rosy Barbs)
  • A sub-tropical "hillstream loach" tank
  • A rainbowfish tank (not sure if I would be comfortable stocking anything bigger than 7cm adult Celebes; Dwarf Neons; Forktail Blue-Eye; Threadfins. Either a pair or two of Empire Gudgeon or a Purple Spotted Gudgeon for the tank bottom, depending upon the smallest rainbows in the tank)

The 55 that I'm looking at is 48" long x 12" back x 20" task. That is about 122 x 30 x 50 centimeters.

Could I have a few figure 8 puffers or green speed puffers?

Green Spotted Puffers need to be alone or they will occasionally be able to be in small groups, as long as you have a lot of plants, and they are brackish. Figure eights aren't as aggressive but should be kept in species only tanks, and they are light brackish. :)

I think I'm settled on goldfish. Much easier to take care of as long as I have a good filter and keep up with water changes.

idk why but ive been tempted to do goldfish too...i guess its just the whole originality that lures me in along with the different breeds.

Id say your looking at 4 ish fancy goldfish in a 55 gallon

option 2 is best, and if u feel like a bit of a challenge perhaps substitute the angelfish with discus and do a planted tank

angelfish are easy to keep (excluding p. altum)

I was thinking 4 ruykins. 1 gold, 1 black, 1 red and white, and 1 calico. I like having a variety of colors. When I started out with guppies I had 1 of each color: red, blue, yellow, sunset, red & black tuxedo, and a fancy.
