1 once they are born how do you know which are females and which are males, because I seen them at the pet shop and they were all too tiny to tell, or do you wait longer to find out?
2 If so, wouldnt they fight befor you even know the sex?
3 If you have a crowntail (mother) and an ordinary beta, could the fry be crown?
4 could some fry be crown if both of the parents are normal?
5 Also what sort of fish food do you recommend for Betas, and what sort of food do I get for the fry?

Sorry if the questions seem n00bish but I guess thats the only way to find out .. ask questions :) This is all Im wondering about atm, im sure there will be more.

I am very interested in breeding, I have put a male fighter fish in with 3 female fighters and there are alot of bubbles on the top of the tank, I guess he is waiting to do his thing lol

thats the WRONG way to breed. they're more likely to kill each other than breed. you need to get the set ups ready, the fish conditioned for at least 2 weeks, the cultures ready to go before you attempt to breed fighters, they're nothing like breeding guppies! the babies cannot stay with the parents, you need a seperate breeding tank or all the babies will be eaten if any survive. and when you can sex them and they start to show aggression males (and sometimes females) need seperate tanks of their own, usually 1 gallons, which need water changes at least once a day. and seeing as bettas can have spawns up to 500, thats a lot of fish to cater for.

female bettas can be kept together, but groups no less than 6 are recommended as they can be as aggressive as males.

males must NOT be kept with any other bettas.

Help! Panic! Have these females been conditioned? Do you know that they are ready to spawn? If not, he is likely to kill them in his disappointment. Besides, I've never heard of bettas being bred in a foursome. Is this something you've got from a reliable source? If not, I'd whip them out quick. What you cannot do is just put females in with a male and leave them to it.

ok got ya's :) i removed the females from the tank. I heard off the fish salesman that you are to have three females for every male, and what do you mean conditioned for about 2 weeks.. Im glad you two told me to stop because I again realize how new I am to all of this. When I dont even know what conditioned is, water changes?

Ok, first off: good on you for removing the females instantly and believing us. It would have ended in disaster. Unfortunately you can't always trust advice given by pet store workers.

BettaTalk is an excellent betta care information site.

Breeding bettas is very time consuming and quite expensive, and many people who have kept bettas as pets for years don't ever try it. You can get up to 500 fry in one spawn. All of those fry will need to be housed and fed daily. Here's a thread to prove how many fry can be born!

Synirr's Breeding Thread

I recommend you keep bettas as pets for a while before you take the plunge into breeding. In the meantime you can research betta breeding and who knows, you might decide that having bettas as pets is enough! :)
