5 Gallon Tank

hi, im thinking of cycling my spare 5 gallon tank to put a pair of platys in (male and female). im planning on planting it and letting the plants grow for a few months then introducing the fish later. i was thinking of using ecoearth as a substrate, would this work for the fish and the plants? if not would fine gravel be good?

I had 3 platys in my 5 gallon tank and ws later told they needed atleast 10 gallons

I'd go for something smaller or less active than platies in a 5 gallon: sparkling gouramis or a betta or heterandrias or maybe a single puffer.
