I have a five gallon aquarium. I have a large aquarium rock that sits mostly above the water because I house a firebellied toad in there. Since the toad rarely swims and there is quite a bit of space, I added two white clouds.

Now here comes the issue. One of the white clouds I found dead when it apparently got sucked up to the filter (the portion that is in the water). It was much smaller than the other white cloud that is still living and I guess it couldn't fight the current.

So here are three questions:

1) Will a larger white cloud be okay in the tank or is there something I can do to put a barrier around the filter to protect the fish?

2) Are 4 white clouds too many for this tank?

3) Would it be okay to put an oto in there for the algae?

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions. :)

Could the toad be releasing toxins? I know they are capable of doing so, and this may be poisoning the fish. Once the toad hits maturity, it may eat the white clouds--could be the one you lost was injured by the toad trying to eat it. Healthy fish, though not all fry, can out swim most filters.

I wouldn't put an oto in--they tend to be very senstive to water quality, and with a messy thing like a toad in there, most likley will be tough to keep alive. Doing more frequent water changes to reduce the nitrates will likely be helpful in controlling algae.

I don't know anything about the toad you have in there. But an otto might become a tasty snack for the toad

White clouds like to be in schools of at least 5, very hardy little fish and great fun. You could certainly try 4 of them in there providing you keep your water changes up to par.

As for the filter, if it has a intake stem in the water, buy a sponge that fits the Aqua Clear "mini" filters, cut a hole in the center of it deep enough and slide it over the intake stem. The filters still works great but no small fish can get sucked up in the filter. I have done this several times, works great :kana:

Using the sponge on the intake keeps your filter cleaner too, make sure to rinse it out when it becomes a bit on the dirty side to keep your water clean and healthy.

Sorry cannot be of more help, I really don't know anything about your frog in there. Hopefully someone will be able to help you more on this topic.

Good Day....bugsy

Thanks for your responses.

As far as the frog eating the fish, I know it won't. It's a good three years old and has been kept with tiny fish before and he won't touch them. In fact, I sometimes wonder if he has vision issues because he'll only eat if I hold his food right in front of him.

Okay, sounds like it will be best to pass on the oto. :)

Bugsy - Great suggestion on the using the sponge for the filter. I'm going to try that! Thanks! :D I would rather have five of the white clouds. Is that too many for the 5 gallon aquarium? I've had them before and just loved their personalities! :)

Thanks again!
