Calling all amano shrimp experts. I bought five amano shrimp a week ago and i can't find them any where :/

I don't think they have escaped, I had a good look around the floor by the tank I've looked under bogwood in the plants end every where. The last time i saw some (3 of them) was on saturday.

I have Polka dot loach do they eat shrimp? I know Clown loach do.

Please help.

Shrimps do a very good job of hiding and excaping through your filter plug line holes.

How large were the shrimp ?

My guess is that they are probably hiding somewhere. I bought ten to start off with and after several weeks I was only ever able to spot 3. Only several months later, I now realise there are 8 (and one escapee) so the 1 must have been a death.

How long has your tank been up and running ?

As I said, I've only ever had one escapee, so doubt very much that you had a mass exodus of 5 !
Even if they were dead, you'd almost certainly see their little skeletons.

Tank has been runnig for two months (cloned not cycled).
I have a Juwel internal black box filter i think i will get the torch out tomorrow and check in there!

I find it fairly unlikely that a Kubotai would have been able to hound down and catch a healthy amano shrimp - they are incredibly fast !

I think it far more likely that your shrimp may very well have died :/ Amano shrimp (as most shrimp) require impeccable & super stable water conditions - cloned or not: an 8 week old tank is not old enough for that to be the case I'm afraid. My guess is your shrimp died and were eaten by the loaches / fish.

Wait another few months before trying with shrimp again.
Better luck next time :good:

Loaches aren't very sneaky, based on the behavior of mine. They're too confident for that. :fun: I don't think they're major predators. They just like to have fun.

Thanks for the advice guys :)

Oh by the way the shrimp were/are between three quaters and one inch long.

Not to rain on your parade, but a dead shrimp will not Always leave an empty exo behind. I've lost 4 shrimp to my 20g in the past, and for all the evidence they left, I've never owned shrimp in my life. :/

My office tank has housed 3 clown loaches and 6 shrimp for over a year now and they never seem at all interested in the shrimps.

I also kept them with angels for a bit and never saw them, once i got rid of the angel they were all out the next day as if nothing had happened. My guess is they are all behind your filter somewhere.

My clowns are roughly 2 inches long so if yours are bigger then it may be a different scenario!

Found three of the buggers inside the filter box, the other two maybe in there I didn' take out the powerhead to check right at the bottom.

Two scuttled away as soon as I turned the torch on and the other one sat there as bold as brass grabbing bits of food that came throught filter vent :look:

:good: you have a Juwel filter right ? ;)

Good news you found them though. If it's a Juwel filter, make sure they can't get in there again.

Yeah Its a Juwell filter, am gonna block the top with foam or something once i get them out.

Going back to what you said before about eight weeks not being mature enough. I was wondering if it makes any difference that every thing in the tank is from mature tanks i.e substate wood rocks and even the water was taken from other tanks??? Every time I have tested it, it comes out the same as the main tank it was cloned from.
Was just wondering what your thoughts are, i'm still new to all this so I am trying to learn as much as possible :good:
