Hi,

I've now aqquired a 45g tank from a mate who emptied it this morning to upgrade for some discus's however he's left all the nice bacteria full sand in it for - still wet :)

Obviously I am going to cycle the tank but I cant have it set up for about 2 weeks due to decorating. Therefore what do you suggest?

- Keep the sand in a bag with water, so I can use it in new setup without washing but wash tank etc?
- Wash all the sand and tank and start from scratch?

Thanks, also I have some Panchax which are being moved into this tank so dont want to get it wrong and hurt them! :-(

I guess you should put the sand in a bucket or bag of water so you won't have a sand storm once you put it back in the tank.

There won't be much point in keeping the sand in a bag, as all the bacteria will be dead by now anyway!! (and will defo have died in 2 weeks time!)

Best bet would be to wash the sand and tank, and start from scratch ina couple of weeks when you've finished decorating.

Sorry for the bad news !!! ;)

Andy

do you have a spare filter?
if so, put the sand in a bucket of water with a filter, and cycle it(if the bacteria already died) and by the time you start up the tank you shouldve mostly cycled

That sounds like a super idea.

Thankyou very much. So I dont need to add any fish or plants whilst I do this?

Nope just add ammoina to it daily to cycle it and transfer the fish from your 15g to it once it cycles.
