Ok so i have 2 questions. I had a 350L in my flat. My flat in a house converted into two flats so the down stairs is one flat and the up satirs is another flat. So i had a 350L in my living room and everything was fine. I then got rid of the tank and then the floor started to bounch back and one of the floor boards started to come lose after i moved the tank.So we had to cut the old board out and put new in. Here is a photo.

You can see we had to cut a block out and replace it.
So now here is a image of my beams for the floor.

So my question is that a 450L would go though the floor ? Im asking because i don't want it to fall onto some ones head.
Also the second question is how deep and wide would a 4ft fish tank need to be to be 450L ? Because the tank is 4ft and have been told its 450L So befor i lift it up the stair i was gonnamessure the height and the deepness and try and work out to make sure it is 450L i was hoping the tank would be a normal 4ft 80 galon tank.

Also just to add i have a big slab of cement in the middle of the wall which you can see here
P1riF.jpg

Were they toke the fireplace out and added a cement slab which goes right down thought the ground floor flat.

I have also been told the tank is around 4ft by 2ft by 2ft. I have done a few searches on google and found that a 5ft by 2ft by 2ft is 450L .... So how can a 4 x 2 x 2 = the same ???

Impossible to answer whether a 450l will go through the floor, each property is different. Bear in mind that a tank that size, hen loaded with substrate, rocks, wood and water is going to be nudging 500kg. Best thing you can do is get a structural engineer out otherwise you will never know for sure.

With regards to tank dimensions it is mathematically impossible for a 4x2x2 to have the same capacity as a 5x2x2!

Cheers

Yes that is what i was trying to say that a 5x2x2 is 450L and then im being told by the seller 4x2x2 is 450L
So im kind of confused ..
Is there anyway i can work out how many Liters of water a tank can hold ?

We have a calculator on this site, although we've lost the link in the shake up. It's here; http://www.fishforums.net/aquarium-calculator.htm

It's a pretty accurate one. My mum had a 5x2x2 and that was more than 450l; around 560, if I remember rightly.

Just so you know a 5x2x2 is over 450 litres. It's more like 500. Well just over. My rio 400 is 5 ft long x 2ft high x a little under 2 ft wide and holds 450litres. A 4x2x2 is a little over 400 litres.

If your looking for a 4ft tank that's 450 litres then you could go for a 110gal tall (around 415litre) - 40x18x30

Or

A 120gal tall (around 450 litres) - 48x20x30

Most fish prefer longer tanks to taller tanks though so you may be better off getting a 5ft long tank like the jewel rio 400 I have. Only fish that really benefit from taller tanks are things like angel fish and discus

Thanks im having the tank delivered tomorrow morning so i think ill put it in my shed and then messure it and see if the calculator works. I had a 4ft bow fronted tank be for and was 350L and that was fine. But had to get rid because of it eating the power :) So i wanted to get a normal non bowfrotned 4ft tank which was around 250L Im thinking anything up to 350L would be fine because my old 350L was fine be for but 450L would be a little to much i think... So im hoping that the seller is wrong . The seller says its 450L to 500L and im hoping there wrong....

I may be wrong but I can't see it being 450-500 litres if its a 4ft tank. I'd think tops of 400 litres. Most 4ft tanks range from around 150-400 litres obviously all depending on the dimensions.

Out of curiosity.. If your 350L was "eating the power" as you say then why did you sell just to get another 4ft of near enough equal size or bigger? Tanks ranging from say 200-400 litres won't be all that different in means of overall running costs. Having said that it does depend on what filters and heaters you run but I can't see it differing all that much...my 450L is not a noticeable amount more to run than my 260L was... Just a thought

I had a 4ft bow fronted fish tank which can be found here.
Old tank
Dimensions 121 x 51 x 55.5 (LxDxH)

The power company i was with was over chargining me so had to sell the tank. I sold the tank and then rang them up and had a go and then they looked at my bills and noticed they over billed me. So now they have told me i can use has much power has i like and only need to pay one ammount ( im on a plan they call it )
so now i bought this new tank
New tank

And has you can see its 4ft. I have been told by the seller its 450L to 500L and she thinks its 4ftx 2ft x 2ft ( she thinks )
So i have a friend who is picking it up tomorrow . I have a outside shed which i was gonna get him to drop it off into and then was gonna messure it and then can see how many L it is.

In my head i was thinking a 4ft bow fronted was 350L so a straight 4ft should be less... But i have been told diffrent by the seller.

Just to end the confusion: 4' x 2' x 2' works out at 453.07 litres. For future reference, you can work this out as follows:

48 (length in inches) x 24 (width in inches) x 24 (height in inches) = 27648

27648 / 231 = 119.688311688 US Gallons

119.688311688 x 3.78541 = 453.069331947 Litres

And im guessing 121 x 51 x 55.5 (LxDxH) does work otu to be 350L ?
If so i think the 100 more L would be pushing my luck ?
Could i also ask how a bow fronted 4ft is less ??

I think it is because i just worked out that
121 x 51 x 55.5 (LxDxH)
is 3.9ft x 1.7ft x 1.82 and has you have said 4ft x2ft x 2ft is a tad bigger... the deapness and height is bigger.

nobody can answer for sure if the floor would hold it or not, if your asking for personal opinions, i simply would not take the chance, not worth the risk in your situation,

if you have people living below you, keep in mind you could (and most likely WOULD) be held legally reasponsible for and damages you cause to their property, so stop and think for a minute how much damage a 500L tank would cause when the floor gives out,

the only way you could be cleared of causing damage would be if you had a written document from an engineer stating the floor is safe to support that weight,

i agree with "fish crazy" you should have a engineer come out and inspect the floor, generally speaking most homes are not built with the intention of having such large weight in one small confined area,

at my last house i had to put a steel "jack post" in my basement to suppot the floor upstairs under the tank,

I wanted to make sure the tank was 450L :) Because i wanted it to be smaller. Like i said i wouldn't put a 450L up strairs. I was only asking because like i said my bow fronted was 350L and that was fine for a few years till i sold it. So anything around 350 would of been good but 450 is way to far from 350 to chance it :) Ill take some emssurements and keep ym finisgers crossed that it ent 4x2x2 ill keep my finisgeres crossed the seller is wrong.

Why would the seller be wrong nick?
There not going to sell something at a guess and not measure it first.

I have just recived the tank last night and its 250L the seller lied :) Its 4x1x1 when it was sold has 4x2x2 :) Im gonna fill it up today and hope for the best. The tank looks like a baby tank. Like i said i had a 4ft bow fronted 350L in my living room ( which was up stairs ) and thatw as fine so im glad this new tank is smaller by a lot :)

Just so you know, 4' x 1' x 1' is actually a lot smaller than you think: 113.267 litres.
