Got a new 42 gallon long tank. My water is soft and acidic. Ideas? Anything goes lol

South American biotope with tetras, dwarf cichlids, plecos, Corydoras, etc. :)

I am already working on a south american one, what about an asian one? Maybe some kuhli loaches and something else?

Do you think a freshwate puffer, the the pea puffer would be a waste of a tank that size? I hear they are also messy, but oh so cute

Hmm...

3-5 honey gourami (1m 2+f)
20 microrasbora species (pick one, there are many!)
15 kuhli loaches

OR

3 pearl gourami
12 harlequin rasboras
15 kuhli loaches

Or, if you want a challenge...

Go samurai gourami :D

Could you tell me more about the samurai gourami? I could always look it up but it's more ffun to hear from people with experience:)

I dont even dare, though ive been tempted.

They need super soft water and very low pH, they're a difficult fish to keep. Unless you have the perfect water for them, theyre one that needs the RO system...

It is a mouth brooder and the females are more colourful.

Theyre small too. They do best in a species only biotope aquarium, blackwater too. But fish like kuhli loaches do fine too as theyre peaceful and from same habitat.

Beautiful though.

My water isnt good enough for them. But if my parameters allowed it, id have gone for them.

Theyre also hard to come by.

Oh yeah my ph isnt quite that low. About 5.9-6.5

Your pH is in the range for them, they range from 3.5-6.5.

But whats the hardness? They need 0-54ppm, so very soft water. This is the most important for them.

12-44 for my area, I forgot what the exact was

Yes, Rasboras is a good choice.
The cheapest and most common is the Harlequin Rasboras which is from Asia. If you get at least 20 of them, it will make a good schooling fish.

There are a few species of Rasboras.
Check here:

Under the Cyprinids family, you can find these 3 groups : Rasboras, Danios, Barbs.

Some Danios like the Spotted Danios(Burmese) from Myanmar are beautiful but might be a bit small.
With a 42 gallons tank, you can have a big group of them though they are a bit rare to be found in the LFS.

Under Barbs, the Five Banded Barbs are beautiful which is also from Asia.

OR
You can have a mix of Asian and South American.

You can add in another group of Tetras such as Cardinal Tetra.

Plus a few Cichlids such as Dicrossus filamentosus or other unique Cichlids.
They have very beautiful fins and tail.

And a few Killifish. (But this is not from Asia)
My favourite now is Gold Lyretail Killifish.

We established your water is very soft, and the pH will lower as the aquarium matures. [I'm in the same general water area, for those other members wondering]. The rarer gourami will thrive here. But many are rather delicate and sensitive. I have kept and bred Chocolate Gourami, (same genus so a very close relative of the Samurai, but no store up here to my knowledge has ever had the Samurai). Photo of that tank (a 70g) attached. I had six Chocolates, 7 pygmy sparkling gourami (also spawning regularly), and Trigonostigma hengeli rasbora. But lots of plants, essential for these gourami especially if you want fry to survive.
