That plec will reach up to 20" long and is really not suitable for any aquarium. IMO they shouldn't be sold as aquarium fish at all. Get rid of it ASAP. Blue Rams are South American so will go well with other peaceful fish from that area. Although 40 Litres is not a whole lot of tank. You've only got room in that tank for a school of about 5-6 small tetras or maybe rasboras sp.

While I agree that it's not by any means suitable for a 40l tank (and neither are rams I'm afraid) I am really saddened by that statement.

In the right sized tank, common plecs are lovely additions - if you like that kind of fish (which I do lol). They are high maintenance (as they poo for England) but they certainly are suitable for some aquariums. Please bare in mind that many folks do have large tanks and the means to house these fish (4ft x 18" x 18" min for a 12-15" specimen, bigger in the event that they'd get larger - it is possible for them to reach 18", but more is very rare).

While it's fair for you to say they're not suitable for many average tanks, it would be unfair to say they're not suitable for any aquarium, as it's quite simply untrue.

You've had good advice here, tigger. The rams need more space for territory than a 10 gallon can afford, and as for the plec, the tank isn't big enough to give him a healthy and safe babyhood even, let alone adolescence. Lovely fish, and if you are able to upgrade I am sure you'll enjoy him, but if not, arrangements have to be made.

FOr this tank, I would do a totally new setup, concentrating on really tiny fish. Like microrasboras, or sparkling gouramis, or ember tetras, or endlers, or heterandria formosa, if you can get hold of them. Shrimps are good too. Or you could do a Tanganyikan species tank with shelldwellers. But basically fish that don't grow much over 1.5 inches.
