40litre/ 10.6 gallon recommendedations.

Hello,
Are there any fish out there that can live in a 40 litre tank that follow most of these rules:
1)Hard water
2)Peaceful with snails
3)Nano tank suitable

I was thinking a male betta but it might attack snails. Possibly Guppies or Endler's Livebearers but I'll need a divider to separate the males and females.
Any suggestions considered.

Also, does anyone recommend a plastic mesh that I could use as a tank divider? If not, then acrylic would do.

I love them but they need soft water. I have extremely hard water.

What if I split my tank in half? One side males, the other females? Guppy or Endler.
Would 20 litres be enough for each gender? At times, I will remove the divider to breed.
