Hello im drooling over a 40 gallon right now but it doesnt come with filtration what would you suggest for a decent but cost efficient filtration system? TIA

I have used aqua-tech filters that I pick up at walmart and they have worked well for me. A 60 gallon filter costs about 35-40$

Hi..hands down, AquaClear OPF or Eheim canister, depending on the type of filter you want and your budget. You can get some good deals on these on Ebay or online, much cheaper than the lfs. Good luck. SH

So I bought the 40 gallon 4 foot long tank today. And for the Filter I bought aquaclear 200 cycle guard.

Got it home put an inch of water in it and it pee'd all over the carpet (bad tank! /me puts down newspaper) So now Im returning it for a replacement and 25 dollars in free fish certicates =]

I plan to siphon the 25 into the 40 about to 30% of the 25 then transfer the fish and gradually fill the 40 up to the top. Anyone see any issue with this?

Sounds good to me. Are you planning to keep any of the fish in the 25 gallon? If not I think you could just put all of the water from the 25 gallon into the 40.

U got it thats what i want to do then just recycle the 25 =] thanks for the quick reply! Keep up the good work shepherding us newbs ;)

if you are recycling the 25 gal anyway, then you could put the 25 gal filter in the bigger tank and run it until the new filter has a chance to get some bacteria build up. It'll seem like overkill but otherwise the fish will be put through a cycle whilst the new filter is cycling.
By changing the water you are just bringing any ammonia, nitrates and nitrites that were in the water in the other tank, very little beneficial bacteria is in the water. You would be better off transfering a large portion of the gravel with no more then 50% of the water from the old tank. That way you get the bacteria and your fish will still have similar water conditions to their old home.

i'd still run the filter form the 25 for at least a week along with the aquaclear 200

I would've opted for a 300 myself but a 200 would be ok. It would be best if you leave both filters in there though, IMO

Another fairly cheep one is the bio wheel which doesn't seem to be brought up here often anymore. Very good filter with a great moter (haven't had any problems with it from the start) also aqua clears are good I'd also go for a 300 more filteration is better than less IMO

If you really want cheap and worth your money, I suggest a Regent Aquatech. Made by Marineland as the "substitute" for the Penguins I guess, they do a pretty good job. They can be adapted to fit the biowheels that the Penguins and Emperors carry, you just have to get the parts. I had a 5-15 on my old 10 gal and it did a good job.

But if I were you, I'd go for an Aquaclear because you can use whatever media you choose, and it's quiet. Go for the filter rated above yours, because you know what they say, there's no such thing as overfiltration! For example you should get the Aquaclear 200 because that's the filter rated for tanks 20 to 50 gals.

However, I'd get the Aquaclear 300, because I'd want more filtration. I have a Aquaclear 200 and a Penguin 170 on my 33gal, but that's just me. It depends on the fish you're planning to get too... And your budget as well.

Edit - Hmm, must have taken a while writing that post. :*)
