I'm going to be setting up a 40 gallon breeder tank, I know that I want to throw a good size school of Hoplo cats (porbably F0 hoplosternum magdelenae), because they are a personal favorite of mine, as well I can get wild caught ones from our Columbian shipper at my work. I'm just trying to think of what else to put in with them, its not a huge tank and those hoplos will take up a bit of space (probably have to trade them back later for small ones again) I wanna get something fast, preferably south american, or even some barbs, but I'm looking to see what other people may suggest as well.

Hi, if this is going to be a breeder tank with Hoplo cats, I wouldn't recomend adding other species. This species is a bubblenester, and other fish may interfear with the breeding and may also get injured during breeding as the males can become aggressive when guarding the nest

I wasn't really planning on breeding them though, just keeping them, I'm just using a breeder tank because I like long short tanks.

I'm picking up a 40g breeder this weekend. I really like the 18" width for planted tanks.

With the cats, you should obviously consider the top half of the tank. There are lots of options though.

How many hoplos are you getting? What size will these particular ones get to?
