I have been keeping fish since 3rd grade and have yet to have a single problem with my tank, filters, fish disease, etc. Now that I’m a freshman in college and living in the dorms, I seem to be having multiple filter problems.
Here’s the set-up: There are two filters on my 10 gallon, a whisper box filter (http
/www.tetra-fish.com/catalog/category.aspx?id=49 ), and a whisper in tank filter (http
/www.tetra-fish.com/catalog/product.aspx?id=28 )
1st: The in-tank filter started to overflow (barely dirty), but instead of flowing over the filter bag, the water went out of the back of the tank drip by drip via the hook the filter hangs off of.
2nd: (in tank) Same thing happened, so I divised a way of making sure that if the water ever overflows, it either goes over the back or to the side of the filter, not to the back of it.
3rd: Just yesterday I cleaned the box-filter, but didn’t disassemble the filter completely (the little motor part with the rubber ring to stop leaking was never removed and I didn’t notice a leak when cleaning). I woke up this morning to find that about 4 gallons of water from my 10 gallon tank is all over my floor (fortunately it missed my roommate’s side of the room and the dorm has hard floor). I turned everything off and after cleaning up the mess inspected my tank. I know for sure that it is from this filter because my tank was lined with paper in the back, and only the side where the box filter hangs was wet.
Both filters are now running, the glass in perfect shape, and no water is leaking. I can’t find where there could possibly be water leaking from the tank, but I’m afraid that if I leave it alone, I’ll end up with more water on my floor.
Any suggestions? I really don’t want to buy another filter since well…they can be expensive, but I’m afraid I don’t have any other choice with the problems I’m getting from these.
