35 gallon

I was wondering what would be the biggest and toughest cichlid I could put in a 35 gallon tank? My wife loves the tiger barbs and wants more along with other fish. I dont mind if it gets me a new 55 though. I've tried to get a 55 with an oscar but that aint gonna happen. She thinks their ugly, UGH! I know an oscar is out but what could be in. Thank you.

let me see if I understand this right... you want to know what you can put in a 35 gallon tank, however you are also looking for a fish that can go in a 55 that you can try and convince the wife so that you can get the 55?

for a 35 your probably lookin at a trio of apistos maybe a pair of cons, could also look at getting a couple of archocentrus spinosissmus, in fact I would wager you could get any of the archocentrus/ cryptocentrus species in there. a single firemouth would also be a good choice.
