Is a 30 gallon tank large enough to house a single firemouth for life? It really picks on my convict and I'm considering separating them.

I would say that 30 gallons is enough to house one, fully grown Firemouth quite comfortably... A fine sand bottom, with rocks/roots for shelter should be fine... I'm sure you know their prefered water chemistry and needs...

30 gallons would be absolutely fine... One fully grown firemouth could confortably live in a tank of that size...
