Ok, I'm still getting the hang of this myself but a couple of things I noticed, what size is the tank to start with, the red tailed shark grows quite large? Also I'd be wary about stocking male and female Bettas (Siamese fighting fish) together. I seem to remember reading in the Betta FAQ that this was a really bad idea. Have a look in the Betta forum, the FAQ is pinned at the top :good:

Yup, I remembered correctly :
Q: Can [betta] males and females live together?

A: Not unless you want a tank of dead fish. They should only be together if you are spawning, or if the tank is full of fry.

Ok greg, i dont know much about the rest of your set-up, but i know that those bettas defineately CANNOT go together...
the male will not go with the other females, as he will more than likely kill 1 or more of them, or will get killed himself...
Females can go together however, but i would have more of them, to spread out agression etc.
Id say 6 or more...

Be wary of the rtbs (black shark) theyre nice fish but as they mature they can become very territorial and aggressive towards other fish, after a year mine started eating other fish, and becoming very aggressive towards them, even my plecs! I ended up having to give him back to the lfs.

the shark may be too big for your tank as they get quite big, and you only want the male betta on its own, or youll get a small war zone in your tank, the glass cats can get to five inchs in length, but do make interesting fish, when you can see them, if you want some nice easy going fish in there get a male and female paradise fish, very pretty and they just chill

cheers for the advice all

ill remove the female fighters from the list

but what about the rtbs, any suggestions on what i could replace it with?

cheers this help is much Appreciated

As others have said... its a definate NO to the bettas living together. Also i worry on the gouramis and shark in with a male betta, they will possibly fin-nip him. Perhaps forget bettas altogether or put him in a smaller tank with non violent fish like mollies or platy. Your lfs should be able to advise you on which fish can live with bettas, they certainly do restrict your freedom of adding 'community' fish. Good luck on tank set up :)

forget the betta, they don't really have many options for tankmates

the shark needs 40 gallons minimum as it grows to 6 inches and is very active.

I think a pair of dwarf gouramies (m+f) would work, as they are territorial, so 4 may be a problem

about the shark, what do you mean by a 'replacement'?

hey, well based on your advice my new set up is:

6 Glass Bloodfin Tetras
6 coolie Loach
2 Dwarf gourmis

and perhaps 1 male betta depending on your advice after i post this

the only problem i see is the male dwarf gourmi fighting with the male betta, if i added them to the tank together at a young ages would they get on better? at all?

oh, and are glass bloofins know to be fin nippers?
