i have 2 platy fry that i was able to catch before mum and dad ate them up! they are in a breeder net and are just over 3 months old. at the moment they both look to be females, but i'm wondering if the male gonopodium develops later and my two girls may actually be boys.

any insight on sexual maturity of platy fry?

it usualy take between 3-6 months for then to devlop, so you may be in for a little wait still, how ever at 3 months you should not need a breeding net now, they should be at least an inch or so.

My fry were fine with the big fish after two weeks i think its the initial building up of swimming ability and strengh as they dont get bothered by the adults at all now

the platy's are dwarf platys - so they're not quite an inch yet! :) the lfs told me that a good rule of thumb is to wait until the fry are 1/3 the size of the adult fish before unleashing them into the tank. they're getting close... i'd like to loose the breeder net though.

thanks for the insight on the time frame.

I have six or seven platy fry. As I didn't expect them and wasn't prepared, they were born in the main tank with the adults. I never managed to catch them to separate them, so I let them take their chances.

I may of course of originally had more than seven

Since they were two weeks old, they have been swimming happily with the other fish (up till then they hid under the driftwood or in the plants). Now at 4 weeks they are very confident, even coming to the top at feeding time. None of the adult platys have tried to eat them as far as I can tell.

In another week they are sadly being taken to the lfs for resale, I don't have the space to keep them :(
