Hi

I'm still very new to looking after fish, although I've had my tank for over a year. Its been pretty settled for months now, and all my fish looked fairly happy and no sign of desease. Yet last week one of my fish died, and yesterday 2 more. The first one has been in the tank for at least a year and the 2 that died yesterday had been in for about 3 months. I did water tests before doing water changes and the results were fairly low, my tank has been in a much worse state which hasnt affected these fish.

The only thing I have noticed recently, the fish make alot of noise during the night, sounds almost like they're chasing eachother. Could this have been a problem? My brother thinks perhaps they were stressed out, hence the sudden deaths.

Is there anything else I could try? I will probably go back to the aquatic shop I got some of the fish from at the weekend for some advice too.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Could be a number of things. Can you fill out the below?

Tank size:
pH:
ammonia:
nitrite:
nitrate:
kH:
gH:
tank temp:

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):

Volume and Frequency of water changes:

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:

Tank inhabitants:

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):

Exposure to chemicals:

Digital photo (include if possible):

Tank size: 90 ltr
pH: 7.6
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate:
kH:
gH:
tank temp: 29-30 degrees (slightly higher than I have the heater sent to)
**These are the current conditions, I have done a water change since the two fish died. However the readings I took last night were only low amounts.

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):
No symptoms that I know, they all seemed pretty happy, nothing obvious when looking at them other than the fighting/chasing.

Volume and Frequency of water changes:
Once a week, normally about 40%

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:
Are you referring to the de chloroniser etc? (i think thats what its called). I havent put any in for a couple of weeks as I ran out.

Tank inhabitants:
No 100% on their names, but An Angel Fish, Gourami, Silver shark, algae eater (not 100% sure as i didnt actually buy it), and two other fish that I believe are chichilds? Im having a few problems finding their exact names.

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):
Nothing in the last 3 months (two of which are the ones that died)
Exposure to chemicals:
No chemicals that I know of.
Digital photo (include if possible):

Sorry I've not been very helpful here, as I said Im still new to this!

Im not saying this is deffinatly an answer but if fish start acting irraticly and dieing shortly after running out (and not re-stocking) of dechlorinator may not be a coincidense. Chlorine is toxic to humans at a high enough level and the same can be said for fish and the bacteria within your filter/gravel.

If the tank is only a 90 litre the tank is to small for some of them fish and its overstocked.
Silver sharks need to be kept in groups and as get bigger need 120 gallon tanks.
I would look into your fish as they may not be getting on in such a small tank.
Declorinator can only get away with not using it when you have ran out is very small water changes.

Thanks,

I've been considering upgrading my tank to The Juwel Rio 125. Would that be big enough? Its pretty much the biggest tank I can get in my room. Last time I take advice from Pets At Home, I bought alot of these fish together and ask whether the tank would be big enough, they said it would be fine!

I will definently be buying more dechlorinator then.

Are there any good tutorials on how to do water changes on the internet anywhere?

Thanks again!

You'll find a few articles on here but its fairly straight forward, just get yourself a gravel vac (if you dont already have one), use its to clean the gravel and also remove several buckets of water. Then refill with dechlorinated water :)

Check this for the weekly maintenance

No a Rio125 is not big enough for sharks. They need at least a 4ft tank if not bigger. They grow to 12" long !

Your pet shop didnt know what they were talking about. I would suggest posting on here if you have any questions about tank mates etc in future.

Good luck.

Ok, I think I've found the culprit. It looks like my silver shark is the problem, I can see it continually attacking my gourami. It actually doesnt look like my gourami has much time left. So how can I get round this? The shark is obviously the problem. But seeing as the only other tank we have has 3 peranah in it. So what do I do? I doubt I'll be able to get a new tank bought and setup in time to save the gourami, but at this rate it'll have the rest of my fish in a few days!

So much for these fish being perfect with eachother (according to pets at home that is!)

Pirahna and silver sharks in a small community aquarium, wow, match made in heaven :look:
