Hi

I am thinking of setting my tank up for Barbs. Is this suitable? And how many would you put in there.

I was looking to put only tiger\albino\green barbs in there. Some sort of combination. Does anyone else do this?

Cheers
Andy.

hi
great idea,i think it would look really nice,
the only thing is,,is that i don't know how many
you can have.........4 of each maybe ?
i've got all of those that you mention, they are great fish,
always on the go.

Hmm actually i would say that the tank is too small for tiger barbs. The tank is only about 13-14 US gallons, the minimum amount of recommend gallons for keeping tiger barbs is a 3ft long 30gallon tank or more- tiger barbs grow to 3inches long each and it is recommend that you have at least 8-10 (as they are quite nippy fish, and in numbers too low they can become very agressive towards each other and other fish, the more you have the more the agression in their shoal is spread out and the less issues you are likely to face with them), they are very active fish so a 3ft long or longer tank is very important for keeping them in.
In a 13-14gallon tank i would stick with small tetra's personally. I'm not sure what barbs you could keep in a 2ft long tank permanently and happily in.

Almost all barbs, even the small ones, like a good bit of swimming space. Cherry's (B. titteya), or Dwark Golden, (B. gelius), will work well though. Cherry's are not shoaling fish though, 1 male and 2-3 females. 2 males in a small tank are likely to fight. 8 - 10 gelius will be great. B. fraseri is still seen from time to time in the trade, also a good choice.
