So as you can see from a Biorb at 60l I've upgraded to a 180l Juwel Vision which will arrive next Thursday. In the meantime there are a few things I'd like to know, and would apprechiate any help that anyone can offer. Being used to keep smaller fish and drawf fish this will be quite an expereince. So a few questions if anyone can help :D

1. I've gone for Beechk what is the best Cliff background? Dark or Light? can you show me your pictures?
2. I wish to grow plants, so what do I put on base? Soil, sand, gravel?
3. Its 180l, What kind of fish would be ideal and look nice? how many?

Any help or futher information you can provide I would really be much apprechiative.

Thanks in advance.

What are you doing with the fish from the bi0rb? (which i have to say is a lot of fish for a small tank)

I would move all of your fish from the biOrb into the new tank, then stock around them (and start by getting those schools up to decent sizes). Quite a few of those I would never consider putting anywhere near a biOrb.

The biOrb is a special extened DIY job I did at my old house where I had more than one biOrb joined on to each other, It is a 60l that joins onto a 30l and it used to have more but these have now been sealed, so officaly it is 90l and to be honest the fish look lost in there, but the tank is done nicely and shall remain as it is and the fish from the biOrb will remain there, the new tank will be purely to start again, but last tank I had was 420 and was over 15 years ago so it's all a bit fresh again for me, so any of those questions answered is of great apprechiation. Thanks

Question one really depends on your preference to question two.

Im not sure about soil, but you can layer your substrates to get a good plant growth base and finish with sand or gravel on top. Best ask in the Planted section about substrates.

Gravel can be nice but most people tend to go for sand as its easier to clean and quite a lot of fish will enjoy digging around in it for food. Me personally, i'll pick sand every time.

Question three, its your tank, you should really be looking around the shop and drawing up a list of fish you like. There are lots of other threads on the forum regarding stocking, the same old advice gets posted over and over so it shouldnt be too hard to put a starting list together then ideally post back for an idea on numbers.

Just remember many tropical fish like to school together and recommended numbers for some are 6 or more and in a tank that size, i would say minimum school size of 8.

Going back to your biorb, its stocked badly, in a sense that you have a nice selection of nice fish, but you havnt given much thought to the minimum size group that they require, buts thats probably because you wanted some variation for yourself.

If you insist on keeping the biorb (worst tanks in the world /spit /spit) then consider removing the rams/gourami and using them as center piece fish in your new tank (when established) and then build your new stock around them.

Thanks for that Tizer, the idea to move the rams and gourami is good and shall do this. Interested to find out more on planting and what is best to have as your base so more though here is certainly needed.

The background all complete will cost me in reign on £120 so I would like to see others in order to get an idea before I pay that amount :D

I have the rio 240 with a plain black background, if you are going to go down the planted route, you would probably look at some nice high plants for the back of the tank anyway, which will cover the 3d background up in no time making them a waste of money. The light sandstone colour ones discolour with algae as do the dark ones and again, if you are going down the planted route, you ARE going to suffer from algae at some point or another and learning to control it is a whole new learning curve. At least with a plane background i can clean it off the glass with a cloth. Enjoy setting up the new tank though, picture diary thread when you have it please ;)

Thank you and yes I shall do, If anyone else can offer any support here to I would be much apprechiative.
