This is how the tank used to look when I had mollies in it. Horrible I know... mom liked the rainbow gravel and fake rock "things"

This is what it looks like as of yesterday. I got rid of the mollies on Thursday. The tank has been bare except for the sand for about 2 weeks or so. This isn't finished yet, I'll post more pictures when I'm done.

I think I'm going to be getting cichlids. Any suggestions? I took these with different camera settings so that's why the color is different on all of them, but it gives an idea of what colors the rocks are.

They do look cool... I wonder if there is a real one that looks like that???

Looking good Jen

I can't suggest any chiclids as I know nothing about them, have you asked Semper or Vip? I'd reguard them as the experts here on chiclids.

It looks like your tank is a 29g tall, is this correct? (2.5ft long)

If this is true, that pretty much removes the possibility of mbuna (which is I _think_ what you were trying to build by judging from your new decoration). May be 1 species Yellow Lab tank with 1 male and 3 females...

How about Lake Tang species? That opens up some possibilities such as shell dwelling species plus one of the smaller Julidochromis species...

checkerboard cichlids!!!!

they would looks awsome in that awsome tank

or maybe some other dwarf cichlids like keyholes or rams or cockatoos!

I was thinking maybe some rams and/or other smaller NW Cichlids, but from all the rocks, it looks like you were thinking more of some Africans. What are your water parameters? I love the way the tank looks!

Thanks you guys. Ya, I was setting up for something african and I know the tank is small. It is 2.5 feet like Yhbae guessed. I really like cockatoo cichlids but I haven't seen them here. I'm going to have to get something pretty common because anything else is either really expensive or I just can't find it. :/ I already have rams, so I don't want anymore of those little guys. Checkerboard cichlids are really pretty but I haven't seen those around here before.

I talked to semper and she thinks it would be ok for a small group of Auratus, which is what I really wanted but I don't know if it's going to be possible. I wouldn't get a male just because I know how agressive they are. I had a few last year in a 30 and I never had any problems. Not even a ripped fin. I was also considering brichardi, yellow labs, or red zebras. I'm doing a species tank so any cichlid I decide on will be the only type in there.

Anyone have any suggestions for the tank? More rocks in any certain place?

Wow, I'm really surprised that he is recomending M Auratus in that sized tank! Perhaps you could explain his reasoning for the recomendation???

My dad has a 29 with auratus and it works great. Maybe I have an oddball, but my female auratus kills everything including her husbands

Yes. Hornwort. We have some in our tanks because it's good for absorbing nitrates and we have 80ppm nitrates in our tapwater.

It's fast growing, hard as nails and is happy either floating or rooted.

Semper Fi is a she :). She didn't recommend it. It was my idea and she thinks that a small colony would work. Umm, I don't know her reasoning, she mods the african forum, maybe you could ask her :D

Oh... Not sure what Semper Fe means but for some reason, it gave me the impression that she was a he... Oops.

Seriously though, if Auratus works for that sized tank, great! But I think you need a good dosage of luck as well in order to get that setup to work...
