Dont rely on the ocean rock for a ph rise, if its actually ocean rock its inert but if its the tufa rock that is sold as ocean rock it will increase the ph and hardness.

(I tested mine after reading an article and no increase)

You would be better with a coral sand or crushed coral substrate with the sand being the better choice.

thx, I am pretty certain it is Ocean rock. I was now thinking of putting this stuff in my Catfish tank to create a few more territories etc. I checked and all my fish are ok with a PH of 7.5, this being the Bristlenose which I was told would be ok in a hard PH tank anyway. The rest are all ok to 8-8.5, in this case would the tank be ok even if it were tuffa rock?

The tank;

3x Hopplo (PH 8)
2x Network Synidontis (from lakes in Africa with high PH, I think)
1x Parrot Cichlid ( presumably fine)
3x Clown Loaches (up to 8.5)
2x Bristlenose
4x Rainbow Boesmena (sp) up to 8.5

That is what the tank is going to be stocked as, I haven't got the Rainbows or Clowns yet. Do you think any of them will be too distressed by me putting in the Ocean Rock?

Sorry forgot the Red Tailed Black Shark, says 7.5 to 8 for him too

The Clown loach really need at least a 5 ft tank IMO, they do grow fairly slowly but easily get to a foot long.

Is this list still to be mixed with Mbuna?

If so:

The RTBS will probably suffer as it is a territorial fish but cannot compete with Mbuna aggression.

The same goes for the Parrot, which also has different dietary requirements to most Mbuna needing a reasonable amount of meaty protein.

IMO Rainbowfish are far too placid to be mixed with Mbuna and will be constantly stressed by the high aggression.

The only compatible fish in your list are the BN's, the Syno's and maybe the hoplo's. :/

just keep the b/n and the synos and add mbuna the rest will suffer even with 1.5" mbuna which are little sods at that size

No sorry, the mbuna have nothing to do with this tank now. I just wanted to put the rock I have in this tank. Sorry for the confusion. The clown loaches I know about their size and I will be upgrading long before they need it as I will be buying juveniles to go along with every other fish I have bought.

I know I have been a pain in this thread but my ambition with this tank is to set up a 4ft tank full of juveniles and watch them grow, increasing the tank as I go. The 4ft will be fine for at least 1 year with that stocking, probably more but that is ok. I will be upgrading before however.

My question is just the effect on that list if I add soe ocean rock I have spare.

Thx again for ur patience.

The ocean rock i have made no difference to ph in a bucket of water so just stick some of yours in a bucket check ph and leave it for a couple of days with an air stone running and check again.

Just one thing i had to rescue one of my synos last week as it got stuck in one of the holes in my ocean rock.

Thx alot for ur help, much appreciated as I know I have been a pain in this thread.
