I was at the lfs getting an estimate for how much my 55 gallon tank is going to cost. I asked the man were the ammonia was and if he had any bacteria to speed up the fishless cycle. He said they had bacteria that is made by Oceanic (i think thats what he said) and they say that it cycles your tank in 24 hours. I was wondering if anybody has ever used this product and did it really work. I hope it does! Thanks.
:D

Only have to ask one question to know if it works or not really. Has it been refrigerated? Some other good questions would be: what is it's shelf life? What kind of bacteria does it contain (you'll have to look up the nitrogen cycle bacteria's I can't remember their names) What does the bacteria eat while on the shelf? Try contacting oceanic.

Yes it is refrigerated. I will go back to the lfs when i pick up the tank to ask them questions. Thanks.
:D

Might want to ask how it was transported too. It needs to be transported in a refrigerated truck.

edit: make sure there is some AMMO in the tank or the bacteria will die. Add the fish a day or a few hours before you add the bacteria not much longer than that though. (Follow the directions on this if they say different then do what they say)

I think Oceanic is part of the same company that makes All Glass aquariums. I've never heard of a "bacteria in a bottle" product by that name. It's not Bio Spira is it? That product is refrigerated and is supposed to instantly cycle a tank.

When i go back i will go read the package and the instruction's and remember products name. If i think it will work i will use and report back on how it did. Thanks for the information.
:D

I am guessing by his av, master P is in the US - not to sure if you can get them there.
You're probably right as that looks like an Atlanta Thrashers (NHL) logo. In the US, the only refrigerated product I'm familiar with is Bio Spira.

Hi MasterP :)

I've heard good things about BioSpira. As far as I know, it's still the only product of its kind sold in the US. Here's a link to its manufacturer's site:

http://www.marineland.com/products/mllabs/ML_biospira.asp

It's not unusual for other products to claim they can do the same thing as BioSpira can do, but they simply can't. I tried a product called Stability by Seachem, which an lfs claimed would cause the cycle to be completed in a week. It didn't work.

Your choices are clear cut. Either use BioSpira or Bacinettes, which are refrigerated products that contain live bacteria, do a fishless cycle, clone a tank by adding filter media from an already established tank, or do a traditional cycle with a few fish. :D

Or instead of spending money on products you can do what I'm going to do to my 55g today I'm going to take about 10 pounds of gravel from my 20g and put it in my 55g and then I'm going to put the filter from the 20g in the 55g and this process is called "cloning a tank" unless you didn't want to put the fish from one of your other tanks in the 55g if thats true then ignore me then. :look:
