hi all,

so having gone off the idea of a desktop betta tank thanks to poor quality betta stock in my lfs i am looking at setting up a new ~20G.

I have my eye on the fluval edge 85l which is expensive but a stunning looking aquarium imo.
-anyone have one of these care to share an opinion? Or is there a better alternative I'm missing? quite like some of the AquaOne       nano/reflex line.

I have also looked at getting a tank made up from private manufacturer which is pretty cheap but not so confident with matching all the correct peripherals such as lighting and filter etc.

with regards to stocking I'm looking at salt-and-pepper cory's and chili rasboras. Wondering if i could get a german blue ram pair in with this? I know they appreciated dither fish but are chili's too small? dont want them getting eaten.

alternatively I like the idea of a dwarf puffer tank so anyone with experience of these apparent gems please do share :)

     - of course other stocking suggestions welcomed.

thanks all for any input.

I didn't know they did an 85l Edge! I can't find it online...

I have both an Edge, and an Aquanano 40, and the Aquanano is by far the better tank from a fishkeeping point of view. The Edge is very awkward to aquascape and light, although it does look good when set up (coincidentally, i have dwarf puffers in mine ;) ), and the filter's quite small, plus the small surface area means you have to keep the stocking quite low.

They'd both be too small for rams, unless you're right about the 85l version. What's your water like, pH and hardness wise?

Dwarf puffers are excellent fish; I've only had mine ten days or so, and they're already favourites. Not the easiest fish to feed though; mine were quite thin when I got them, and I've had to put fair bit of effort in to get them feeding.

ah thats my bad! typo im afraid. I meant fluval fresh 85l

so an 85 would be big enough for a single ram pair? Ive wanted german blue's for so long!

then again I also really want dwarf pufffers. I hear they are very characterful. how many gallons per puffer do you allocate? i read very mixed opinions online. and how are they to feed?

cheers

Sorry, I forgot all about this thread

An 85l would be fine for a pair of rams and some dithers. Rams are really tricky little fish; I don't actually keep them any more, even though they're my favourite fish and my water's perfect for them :( I think the hormones they use to breed them and get them to colour up leaves them very weak.

It's normally recommended you have between three and five gallons per puffer; I must admit I've got three in a six gallon Edge, but I am doing regular, large water changes to keep the water quality up. I'm managing to get mine onto frozen foods by mixing it in with live daphnia/cyclops from my water butt, plus some small ramshorns I've got breeding in goldfish bowl. All mine had quite sunken looking tummies when I got them, so I did take a risk, as you are supposed to pick plump ones, and see them feeding before you buy.
