I am soon to buy a 200 litre tank. I want to know what filter is adequate for maintaining this tank?

Do I need to buy an external or will (for example) a Fluval 2+ or 3+ internal be good enough?

Thanks, James :good:

personally, i would get an external. for my 216 litre i have a rena filstar xp2. but the more filtration the better. i am thinking of getting another filter of similar size, so you may want to get 1 or 2 externals, depending on stocking etc.

cheers :good:

Anything between 1000lph - 2000lph should be fine. When looking at filters allow a little bit for them over exaggerating the lph because I think I heard that when they test them they test them without filter media or anything like that. So when they say 1000lph it's normally a bit less.

Also I'd go for an external on a 200l tank (I have a 125l and have an eheim pro 2 2026 on that). But you don't need an external. I think some of the larger internals would be suitable. Definitely nothing under a fluval 4+ though, and to be honest that would still struggle a bit.

Thankyou for your reply. Im not going to go crazy with the stocking but I would like a decent amount of fish.
If I am going to get an external, Im going to just get the single one.

What about getting 2 Internals? Whats the deal with that?

Thanks, James :good:

*EDIT* Thankyou Curiosity for your reply.

the biggest problems i find with internal filters is they take up too much room and look quite ugly in the tank
i would go with a large external filter eheim 2017 would be a decent filter for that tank

I agree with the taking up space. The bigger your tank, the bigger the filter needed so if it can outside the tank, you have that much more space to play with.

Im going sorting my tank out on Tuesday, so i'll have a good look at external filters and see what is on offer

Thanks for your replies :good:

James.
