i was looking at fish stuff in walmart today and this lady was there and she had two goldfish in a ten gallon tank with some other fish that are agressive so she was going to get a betta cup to move the goldfish to, but then the salesclerk there pointed out a goldfish bowl to her, it was maybe a 1 gallon bowl at the most and he told her that she could put 15-20 goldfish in there....
i waited for him to leave and talked to the girl, we both agreed he was insane. she wound up getting one of those double betta cups for her 2 bettas (who are currently in a 2.5 gallon mini bow), and is going to move the 2 goldfish to the 2.5 gallon.
not ideal but at least better than it could have been.

thats exactly why people should stay away from buying fish from walmart
they dont have people dedicated to the pet section and will call any random person with no knowledge of fish whatsoever to help a customer

2goldfish in a 2.5gallon is still pretty overstocked depending on the size of the fish
i would have suggested a new $10 10gallon tank for the 2 goldfish

yeah, me too, but she wanted something small and didnt want to spend the $10 for a hood and $20 for a filter, so she just bought the $5 betta cups.

That is a shame considering that most goldfish easily get 6". Either way, i have not had any good experiences with Walmart and would never buy fish from there. I personally think they shouldnt even have fish there.

Yeah i agree, supermarkets should never sell live animals/pets, i think it sends the wrong message to people interested in getting pets.
I remember reading article somewhere that Tesco (massive supermarket over here in england) was wanting to get permission to sell fish, i cringed when i read this, i can just see another walmart petshop of horrors disaster in the making -_- .

I recently went into my local Walmart (Walpole, MA) just to see what they had for fish stock, and what shape the tanks were in...and they were all gone! :hyper: Their entire fish section was about 1/2 isle long now with dog bedding where the tanks once were. I wonder if this will be a chain wide trend, or just something at my local store.

i think its all walmarts, the 3 walmarts ive been to around here all have horrible fish tanks with tons of dead fish
the problem is no longer have a person dedicated to the fish so they arent being taken care of
the people that work there usually dont feed them because they dont know what to feed them and they leave the dead fish in the tanks to rot which brings all kinds of diseases to other fish

they used to have people dedicated to the pets section about 2 years ago and i guess they didnt feel the need to have some dedicated to that section anymore and got rid of them
there used to be a time when the fish at walmart were safe to buy but now it should be your absolute last resort when buying fish

That is so sad though.
1 goldfish needs 20 gallons :(
& A great filter,they are quite messy :(

I don't have a fish store near me,only place I may buy fish& supplies is walmart.
I quarantine my fish first& make sure I read up on fish before I buy >_<*

There is nothing that can humanely live in a fish bowl.

How come they put fighter fish in a glass bowl with no bubbler etc?

who?

The bad people :ninja:
Probably because Bettas have a labyrinth organ and can take air directly....

oh.... i dont have bubblers in any of my tanks, cause i cant stand air pumps. i dont think not having a bubbler is bad. i think every fish should should at least have a filter though.

I am so sick and tired of hearing people say that they didn't want to spend the money, so they bought what they felt like. This isn't about us, people, it's about the fish. It's about their well-being, their health and their safety. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.... :grr:

Ok, I feel better now. :look:

Air stones don't actually put oxygen in the water, its the movement created by the bubbles reaching the surface that increases oxygenation (i hope, fingers crossed) as long as your filter stimulates the waters surface you'll have oxygen in your tank...
Lynda i agree, its mildly nauseating...

I really hope they dont branch into pet sales.
Unfortunetly, that seems to be the way they are heading they've expanded so much over the past few years.

I personally wouldn't buy from them if they did. I've also heard lots of bad walmart stories from friends across the pond.
