How many fish could I stock in a 20gallon LONG tank, I was thinking of getting 3 or 4, I know the general rule is 10gallons to begin with then 5 gallons for ever other goldfish. The tank will be in my Dad's garage, so I was wondering during the winter season (where I live it can get to -23C or lower...) if I could just place 1 or 2 50watt heaters in the tank and would they be fine? Or would I be better off to take them inside during the winter months to prevent any possibility of freezing?

the general rule is 20 gallons for the first goldfish then 10 for every additional goldfish

Ok... well, I've been told otherwise in the past but thanks much now I know only 2 max in that tank. Now, regarding the winter time? 1 or 2 50watt heaters in the tank? Think it'll be sufficent to keep the tank warm enough not to freeze over, but still cold enough for the goldfish?

A coldwater tank indoors shouldn't freeze over, even in Winter. Unless you leave all your doors and windows open..........

You could add a heater just a precaution, especially since the tank will be kept in the garage and I know some garages can get quite cold! I personally would have a heater in, however keep the temperature low....:good:

You could probably do two goldfish just remember that goldfish are bioload masters. I would suggest a filter that is recommended for a 55 gallon tank and put it on your 20.

Thanks much, so for the winter months I will be adding a heater as a percaution, I'll set it at the lowest setting (on this heater thats 70-72F, something like that). Hopfully all goes well and I don't end up with frozen goldfish popcicles!
