i have two rams and they've been in the same tank together for a while, and every so often i see them snap at each other, but i now noticed that this morning they are nose to nose staring each other down. and biting at each other. and also their colors have come out a bt. their dorsal fin stands strait up, which looks really good. i think they are both females, but im not 100% on that.

What is this about and what can i do to prevent/stop is from happening?

Rams are pretty teritorial and if you don't have a lot of space they might end up fighting till somebody is badly injured and dies. I use to have 2 females on my 33 g and they were getting along fine until they reach maturity. If you have space, try to get 3 more rams so that no fish will be isolated, all the beatings will be spread around....goodluck....
