Hi all,

Q1. My dad has a red belly piranha in a tank on its own (i aint sure on the tank size) and i was wondering if a rubber nose pleco would survive in the tank because his tank gets alot of algue due to it been in the sun all day.

Q2. I have a 18 gallon tank that will be empty soon and i was just wondering how many Pygmy Puffers i would be able to SAFELY keep in the tank without over stocking.. but if i cant get hold of any Pygmy Puffers then what puffers would you surgest and how many?

Thanx
Chris

I want to say that you can't keep anything but piranah in a pirana tank, but i don't knwo much about them.

You should ask the second question in the oddball forum. Some of the people that really are good with puffers don't even visit the chit chat forum.

My local Maidenhead Aquatics store has a huge tank of pirhana that co-habit (seemingly peacefully) with a large common plec. I would just check the tank size first before adding plec, they grow large and produce a lot of waste.

Also adding a plec wont solve the algae problem...especially if the tank gets alot of daylight. Most plecs need a varied diet to survive and algae plays a small role.

i saw several prianhas in a tank with a plec and they seemed fine. u could always take the plec out if there was trouble brewing!

you can't always just take a pleco out, they get to be pretty big. if you do get one, be sure you have a backup plan.
also, plecos at the store are usually pretty small, maybe that could also pose a problem with a piranha? :dunno:

figure out the gallonage on the piranha tank too, maybe it'll help more people to help you. aquarium calculator

As do piranhas - they also should be in groups so a very large tank is needed (150 gallons) and adding a pleco won't solve algae problems, nor is it advisable to do so as the plec will most likely be killed - especialy if housed with a lone piranha.

The first question should be in the characin section and the second in the oddballs. :)

I have 4 piranha and 3 plecs in my tank. The piranha ignore them totally. I do keep a close eye on them though. I wouldn't put a small plec in with him, try to match sizes. Also, give the plec plenty of hiding spots just in case.

What size is your tank?

I would recommend getting more piranhas if you have the tank for them. Piranhas are schooling fish and do better with mates.
