Hi,
I have 2 pregnant Mickey Mouse Platy's who go to the bottom of the tank and kind of rub their side on the gravel and also rub their sides along the rocks. Its like the swim up to it really fast and twist their body and rub really fast. I have other fish in the tank including another Platy who is not showing any signs of this rubbing. Could this be a sign that their skin is itchy or could this have something to do with thier pregnancy? I just hope they are not getting sick. I have not added any new fish to the tank either.
Thank you

Have you checked them to be sure it's not Ich or Velvet? That's one of the symptoms. Do they have small white spots like sprinkled salt on them? Or any smaller spots that may appear white or gold, and may look like a fine gold dust sprinkled on them?

If it's the white spots, it's Ich. If it's the smaller spots like a fine gold dust, then it's Velvet. Either way, it can be treated with a parasite killer. Anything that claims to kill it, usually does.

Thank you. I have already shut the lights off on the fish tank for tonight, but I will check them first thing in the morning for any signs.
thanks again

Yea, there is very cheap and good meds that will cure ick in 2 days, and it reall does. Its a small bottle of blue liquid that treats about 400 gallons. Thats what i use and it works jus fine.

yeah i would give them a couple drops but be careful if you have some scaleless fish to not overdose

Another possibility is trouble with the gills, such as gill flukes. Does it look like your fish are trying to scratch their gills against objects? Are the gills red and swollen? Fish also do this if there's some kind of irritant in the water, like chloramine.

If your fish have no visible symptoms, it might be that the water is too soft or perhaps dirty.

Oh, and remember not to medicate unless you're sure of the disease. Unnecessary or wrong medication might just stress the fish and make things worse.

What are your water stats- ammonia/nitrate/nitrite?
If somthing is amiss in the water quality department then that could explain the itching and scratching in the fish.
I wouldn't add any meds just yet until we have found out what exactly is wrong otherwise this could just cause more stress to the fish as mentioned.
