2 New Fish, Surprising Mix!

I dunno, with African Cichlids? Their a mean bunch....They don't even go near the plec, maybe because he;s 5x bigger than them, but they don't seem to be very interested in the lobster anymore..

The point isn't that they aren't interested in him... HE will be come interested in them eventually, watch for shredded fins.

African cichlids are pretty damn tough, they can take down south american cichlids three times their size. They evolved to fight. I think your LFS owner may be right, that the crayfish may be in a little more danger than the african cichlids. Those blue lobsters only get about 5'', so he wont be attacking the africans later either, since he wont grow too much more than 4''. If the africans wanted to, they could take him down in a blink of an eye. Not that they do want to though.

incorrect on the 5". there's at least one species of the Cherax family that can reach and exceed a foot in length--plenty big enough to eat a few mbuna.

Well, i know that there is large lobsters, but i think Ethos's will stay fairly small. And if it does get big, im sure Ethos will be responsible enough to rehome it. The biggest lobsters can take down full grown oscars... mbuna wouldnt stand a chance, unless they were around 6''.

and just what makes you think that Ethos lucked out and got a small species? while the picture does confirm that yes, it's a lobster and yes, it's blue, there's not too much more information to be gleaned from the image. and good luck to him on rehoming a 12" crustacean.

Ethos, before panicing one way or the other, i would definately recommend that you take additional photos and get the identity of your lobster confirmed on a good crayfish forum. i recall redbled mentioning one in FW Inverts a while back. hopefully, you do have the 5" variety, but there's also a good chance that you don't.

I was told by the guy that the lobster would only get about twice his size, and he's about 3 inches long now, so 5" sounds correct.
I'd take better pictures, but my camera sucks, so I can only give the general Idea.
If he does pose a more potential threat, I will certianly rehome him.
The guy said they can take him back, but no refunds or exchanges...
He spends alot of time being perched in a tunnel, or near the plec.

yup, they also swim backwards too. looks pretty funny when they swim. if you want a red crayfish, you can probably get one for less than a dollar at the supermarket
Except for the lobsters you eat, those are SW and cost about $20-$30

Alright, my blue lobster/crayfish died tonight. I was going to actually move him into my 5G tonight.....I guess I didn't do it fast enough

Well, I kinda noticed he wasn't getting picked on while the tank lights were on, but it happened in the dark.
I started noticing how his feelers got shorter and shorter every morning, which is what I was going to move him tonight.
He was halfway under a rock when I found him, apparently he was trying to dig himself into shelter, but died before he got there :-(
